The first time I read a Wrinkle in Time was when I was in 6th grade. I've read it so many times since then because it's just an amazing story. Its sci-fi meets coming of age and is written beautifully. The book opens with Meg, Charles (her little bro) and they are wondering what happened to their dad who had been working for the government and has disappeared. He has been missing for a few years and the kids and their Mom have no clue what happened to him. Until one day someone shows up at the door and takes them on an adventure through the universe where they travel into worlds that are controlled by a mysterious being (IT). It is a great book for middle schoolers and English teachers to talk about figurative language and was a fun read. It also connects to math by introducing students to the concepts of dimensionality and understanding the progression of space from 0 dimensions to 4 or 5. There is also the issue of diversity that is addressed in this book. Charles has succomed to the darkness in a part of the book and they discuss how on the planet being different creates problems, and can be confining. This imaginative book will surely keep your kids on the edge of their seats wondering if Meg will be able to save her brother from the mysterious IT and find out the truth about what happened to her father. ( ![]() This book would be appropriate for upper elementary grades or for a class read aloud for intermediate elementary grades. This is the story of Meg and her brother Charles Wallace who must travel through time and face all sorts of new, confusing, and terrifying things to save their dad and possibly the world. While I appreciated the imagination and creativity behind this story, as well as the unique incorporation of math, I found it a bit slow in the beginning and it left me with an unsettled feeling in the end. I do think this would be a good fit for readers who enjoy science fiction or fantasy fiction stories. I read this quickly to catch up with Sword and Laser podcast. It's been on my list for a long time and I finally got around to it. I enjoyed it, but it didn't make a huge impact. I might read more of the books, but I don't really have a compelling need to do that. I'd heard before about the religiousness of the book and while I don't necessarily mind, I think it was unnecessary and a bit of out of place. I might've liked this more, had I read it when I was younger. I'm annoyed at myself for not having read this sooner. So lovely I do not see this as a classic read. I'm sure in 1962 it was unusual,I get that. But I thought none of the characters were that likeable and the story was not really very tight. Lot's of things happen with no explanation. One little thing that bothered me was the style of conversation was not 1960s it was more like 1920's. No teenager in 1960 called a 6 year old boy "old sport". As I read the movie reviews I see similar comments.
