The best of the groundbreaking website learningtoloveyoumore.com, which asks ordinary people to complete out-of-the-ordinary assignments - with extraordinary results. In a world obsessed with "reality" programming, the collaborative public art project known as "Learning to Love You More" offers a refreshing take on how actual people think, act, and love. Created by Miranda July and Harrell Fletcher, the web-based project, begun in 2002, offers more than sixty "assignments" that can be completed by anyone: "Write the phone conversation you wish you could have"; "Photograph two strangers holding hands"; "Draw a constellation from someone's freckles"; "Take a flash photo under your bed." Completed assignments are posted on the web site; to date, more than 5,000 people have participated in the project - artists and non-artists of all ages, from New York to Cullowhee, North Carolina, and from Tel Aviv to Rio de Janeiro. July and Fletcher have curated a selection of the most memorable submissions - some moving, others hilarious and oddly brilliant. Together they create a pop culture collage that tells a larger story about life today. The result is an engaging, heartwarming, idea-sparking book sure to inspire, teach, and entertain. 160 colour illustrations… (mer)

My favourite project is, "Make an encouraging banner:"
- Death is Not the End
- Look Twice
- You Belong
- You Will Find It ( )

With the sole exception of Nina Hartley's groundbreaking work, I dismiss anything created by someone born in Berkeley CA by default. I always was dubious of the website but you know what, it was good. If you hated "Me and You and Everyone We Know" like I did, give this book a chance anyway. It brought me to tears a couple times. I was blown away by this book. The authors have a website where they post "assignments" for users to complete and submit. The assignments can be anything from "take a picture of your parents kissing," to "write your life story in a day," to "make an encouraging banner." People from all over the world have submitted amazing responses, and the book is filled with their pictures and stories. It's one of those interactive, boundary-defying communities that makes you feel good about the world, which can be a pretty tall order sometimes. ( )

The idea behind this art project is to give people, that's anyone, vaguely specified art assignments through a web page and see what responses said people comes up with. The results are beyond interesting.

I bought the book as I way to support the project bu one can just go and navigate the webpage and take a look at the same stuff. ( )
