This collection of ten contemporary fairy tales puts a delightful new spin on classic stories and themes. King Midas is a workaholic banker who would rather play with his money than attend his son's Little League baseball games. The Big Bad Wolf is running a successful scam on Little Red's Grandma until Little Red catches him in the act. The Three Bears invade Goldy's house because their forest home is being stripped to build a super highway. A Prince refuses to marry any of the grumpy princesses who lost sleep because there were peas under their mattresses. A clever princess pays a dragon to lose a fight so she can marry the man she loves. This collection of ten contemporary fairy tales puts a delightful new spin on classic stories and themes. Cute, funny book! I just read the sample on iBooks but I liked the red riding hood story! Very modern twist, and it's endearing. Ending was quite creative! ( )

Newfangled Fairy Tales: Classic Stories with a Funny Twist book #1, Edited by Bruce Lansky and published 1997 by Meadowbrook creations is a twist on traditional literature written by numerous authors. This chapter book provides the classic fairy tales with a little twist added to them. This book is edited By Bruce Lansky but has many different authors contributing their own little twist to classic traditional fairytales. The story I found most humorous was Jill and the Beanstalk by Denise Vega. This is an interesting take on Jack and the bean stalk that stars a much brighter child. As the editor put it “why was Jack rewarded for being so dumb as to trade a cow for a golden goose.” I liked how the language pushed the reader to think of the differences and similarities of the two stories and how the plot added suspense to the story. I did not like how gruesome and detailed that the story got for its targeted age audience. In jack and the giant beanstalk we see a boy who sells his cow for beans then goes to a giant’s tower and is rewarded. In this story we see a girl who is smart enough not to let this strange man possibly con her and her mother out of their cow, their only source of food and income. Jill goes on to investigate the giants and why nobody visits them. Jill defiantly seems smarter than Jack and I feel that this better related the story to me because of the memory I have with the older book. In this story the giant does not eat Jill because she is a girl. The plot to this story is a very fast paced and full of suspense. Originally I thought she would be eaten. It is this action and twist that keeps the plot interactive and engaging. When the girl entered the castle I was filled with suspense. I thought will she find the goose? What about the giants? This suspense kept me engaged the whole time. I also liked that the plot was very organized and flowed with the original story. Since the plot was similar at times to the remember all story of Jack and the Beanstalk this story was more clear than if it was a standalone piece. Together with how organized the plot is, this story is very fun. It has a clear middle and end and helped me to get through the story. The only think I did not like was how gruesome this was for the emended age range. In the story the giant talks about how he does not eat girls because their brains are so much larger than boys that parts of the nerves get stuck in his teeth. I thought that this was gross and that it took away from the story. Patience and kindness are the center themes of this story. Jill must be patient with the old man so he will give her a good payment for the cow. Jill is very kind to the giants and helps them to meet the townspeople. ( )
