Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, also known as Pseudo-Denys, was a Christian theologian and philosopher of the late 5th to early 6th century (writing before 532), probably Syrian, the author of the set of works commonly referred to as the Corpus Areopagiticum or Corpus Dionysiacum. His works are mystical and show strong Neoplatonic influence. For example he uses Plotinus' well-known analogy of a sculptor cutting away that which does not enhance the desired image, and shows familiarity with Proclus. He also shows influence from Clement of Alexandria, the Cappadocian Fathers, Origen of Alexandria, Parmenides and others.The Corpus is today composed of Divine Names, Mystical Theology, Celestial Hierarchy, Ecclesiastical Hierarchy, and ten epistles. Seven other works, namely Theological Outlines, Symbolic Theology, On Angelic Properties and Orders, On the Just and Divine Judgement, On the Soul, On Intelligible and Sensible Beings, and On the Divine Hymns, are mentioned repeatedly by pseudo-Dionysius in his surviving works, and are presumed either to be lost or to be fictional works mentioned by the Areopagite as a literary device to give the impression to his sixth century readers of engaging with the surviving fragments of a much larger first century corpus of writings. Primer tratado del Corpus Areopagiticum o Dionysianum. el titulado Los nombres divinos constituye un texto fundamental para la filosofía y la teología medievales y modernas. Entre sus aportaciones relevantes se halla la vinculación sistemática entre fuente bíblica y pensamiento racional. y asimismo. la presentación de un excursus sobre el origen del mal. tema perenne. Los nombres divinos plantea. además. en forma sintética. las ideas que desarrollarán los tratados siguientes que. en su denominación tradicional. son conocidos como La jerarquía celeste. La jerarquía eclesiástica. Teología mística y Epístolas.
La identidad verdadera del autor se desconoce; hubo más de veinte propuestas de solución de este anonimato pero ninguna logro el consenso de los especialistas. de ahí que sigamos refiriéndonos al autor como Pseudo-Dionisio. dado que éste es el nombre por el que él se dio a conocer. Se lo considera el iniciador de la mística cristiana y sistematizador de la angelología. Se trata de un cristiano influido por el neoplatonismo y profundamente versado en la Biblia. Diversos detalles del texto. de la lengua y de las fuentes permiten ubicarlo en el primer cuarto del siglo VI.
La presente traducción. a diferencia de las anteriores. se funda en el reciente texto crítico. establecido por Beate R.Suchla. e intenta respetar el estilo complejo y la lengua innovadora que caracterizan a este autor. Lengua y estilo pretenden sugerir al lector que la temática del Corpus impone una expresión análoga a la inefabilidad de Dios y de la experiencia mística; por eso nos hemos detenido en ellos y señalado sus características. de modo que la persona que acceda a este libro cuente no solo con el texto mismo. ante el cual pueda reaccionar de modo similar a como pudo hacerlo el lector de su tiempo. sino también con otros indicios que le permitan valorar mejor el lugar que esta obra singular ocupa en la historia del pensamiento.
