The Mevrouw Who Saved Manhattan: A Novel of New Amsterdam av Bill Greer (Manthepark)
Manthepark: Another great historical novel about New York, when a bunch of bawdy Dutchmen ruled the place. Imaginative and authentic.

This is a novel about the growth of New York City from the 1700's to 9/11. It starts with the religious abuse of the Irish in Northern Ireland in the early 18th Century. If you like to know about how people lived during that time it is a wonderful book. ( )

Cormac, a young irish boy, grows up in the 1800’s in Ireland. He must cope with living in two different world one as a Christian hiding his other world, or true self which is true pagan Irishman. This book follow Cormac’s epic life first in Ireland and later to America following a duke because of a pact he made to his family. Cormac makes a life in New York as he plans his revenge on the duke. His life is almost taken as he enacts part of his revenge. He instead is infused with immortality that only stays with him as he is within the area of Manhattan. As Cormac lives his life through history we see and learn about facts we may have never thought of happening in the U.S.

This book was pleasantly not what I expected. To me there was a lot of heart in the description in the regions that Cormac lived in and in the way he viewed thing. Many of the things that happen over years, such as slavery, wars, and rise of New York City as we know it, were explained in a way I never really thought of.

In many other reviews people did not like how long the intro to Cormac life growing up in Ireland was or how quickly time past in New York, especially once you were starting to like a character and then they would be gone. To me these were the things I liked. I loved the way Cormac’s life started in Ireland. It reminded me of my visit to Ireland although Cormac was there much earlier in time. When he was in New York as time past and he met friends, lovers and learned different trades he lived life. Sometimes life was boring, sometimes it was more interesting and sometimes he stayed distant to people because well he was immortal. They were going to eventually pass and he was not.

Some of the blurbs say this book is as good as Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings. That is high praise. I understand the comparison and it is a good book, very good book but maybe not as good as Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings. I would recommend this book as one your going to want to reread and hope for sequels. ( )

i just finished reading one of the best books i have ever read, and one of the best fiction tales i have ever come across. the story itself could have been a hokey pretense but hamill is a master. the jacket copy does not do this book credit (really? fans of harry potter? ok...) but no matter. there are at least three books in one here: a supernatural thriller, a centuries-long history of new york city and a tender love story. but even then there is so much more...the lead character is inspiring and well-drawn. i do not read a lot of fiction but this is one of my two favourites of the form. please read this book. I enjoy the TV series "Forever," and wanted to read the book on which the series was based if, in fact, a book existed. Author Pete Hamill, apparently, isn't pursuing a lawsuit against the TV show, but there were enough similarities between his book and the TV series to make me want to read the book. If the entire book were as good as the first 1/3, I would have rated this book higher. The book starts out so promising, with such wonderful, prose. And, while the rest of the book was interesting, historically, it didn't compare with the beginning. Nevertheless, I did enjoy it very much. "Forever" got me to buy and read Hamill's "Snow in August," which I thoroughly enjoyed. ( )

This was my first Hammill novel. It took a minute to get into it, but then I couldn't put it down. I was a little disappointed by the abruptness of the ending and felt like I was somehow cheated. But, it really couldn't end any other way, so there's that. ( )

Is ''Forever'' fundamentally a story of the Irish immigrant experience, a history of New York, the story of a son's mythic quest for vengeance across many generations or a fable about the spiritual kinship of the oppressed peoples of the earth? The answer, unfortunately, is that it tries to be all those things simultaneously, which means that despite its honorable intentions and its moments of grandeur and elegiac sweetness, it can't finally be any of them.

And what a people loves it will defend. We took their temples from them and forbade them, for many years, to worship their strange idols. They gathered in secret, deep in the dripping glens, Chanting their prayers before a lichened rock. -John Hewitt, "The Colony" 1950
