I really liked this book and I think it is great for guided reading with students to ask them questions about ice and snow, especially since these things are so easily recognizable for children. I even read this book with a student and she was able to use the picture cues to make connections with what she has seen in the world such as frost on the car or ice in her drink. This book is great for asking prompting questions to allow students to think deeper about the ways they use water and ice in their daily lives. This book is great for young readers to star making connections to their word. ( )

Water as a solid makes for a perfect guided reading book for beginning readers. The realistic pictures allow for a perfect picture walk as well as students to be able to make real life connections to what they have seen before. This can lead to different discussions when students are able to relate to the text that they are reading. However, for some students who have never experienced snow this concept may be foreign to them. Therefore, a nice transition from the reading could be a hands on experiment so students can get a real life visual of what they are reading. ( )

I gave this book a 5/5 star rating because I like how it was informational with real life pictures for readers to look at while reading. For example, "Ice cubes are small pieces of ice, Icebergs are huge pieces of ice." It shows a girl holding a cup of ice cubes and a picture of a large iceberg next to a boat. Readers can differentiate between the two different sizes of ice. This would be a great book for young students learning how to read because it is informational and there are real life pictures or even for teachers to use as guided reading books for their students. Water as a Solid by Helen Frost is a good book to have in your classroom although it maybe challenging for some students, especially new students from Latin America. The book provides a wide array of details about what happens to water when it freezes. For a large number of students this would be a good book to have since it is easy to read with vocabulary most students are familiar with. The book also provides detailed pictures which provide good context about what is written on the page. Again the only problem you may have with this book is for students who have not experienced northern winters, so a large number of the things mentioned in the book i.e. icicles will be foreign to them. This book is very informative and could be used as a science guided reading text. The author uses realistic pictures to explain the text, instead of drawings. For example, one page has a picture of a man showing his son to put food in the freezer, and the text says , "People use ice. It keeps food cold". This can help students use the comprehension strategy of making text-to-self connections, as they almost positively have a freezer at home to put food in. However, with guided reading it would be helpful to have some sort of pattern from page to page so that younger children could catch on to certain words faster. Due to this, I would say this is a guided reading for beginning readers, not emergent. The main idea is to show how water can turn to ice and have different functions. ( )
