( ) Usually I don't like these guidebooks but this one is very entertaining and saves on obvious or needless advice. The author actually almost takes an ironic position concerning guidebooks, however, not without giving some trivial advice himself. Probably the best way of reading this book is taking it as an entertaining though sketchy textbook about time with its many characteristics. The author has succeeded in writing a witty and scientifically correct book filled with many interesting facts about the perception of time, measuring time, and the physics of time.
“Do not squander time,” wrote Benjamin Franklin, “for that is the stuff life is made of.” Sage advice, but it begs a question: Why do we experience time in the ways we do? In The Secret Pulse of Time, Stefan Klein shows how our subjective sense of time originates and how we can learn to deal with time more mindfully. The book is divided into three sections. In the first, “Experiencing Time,” Klein explains how we all carry hidden clocks inside our bodies that regulate biological processes In Part II, “Using Time,” Klein addresses a modern malady: The widespread feeling that we don’t have enough time. The final section of the book, “What Time Is,” delves into insights from modern physics—with an emphasis on Einstein’s special theory of relativity
Popular science at its very best, The Secret Pulse of Time awakens us to and empowers us with the idea that time is far more at our disposal than we have previously realized. Award-winning journalist Stefan Klein-- whose previous book, The Science of Happiness, is a longtime international bestseller--here provides what are essentially "operating instructions" for time. Through a combination of original investigation and reportage, personal revelation, and a commanding presentation of scientific research (among disciplines including brain physiology, social psychology, philosophy, and Einsteinian physics), The Secret Pulse of Time teaches readers not only to better master time but also to understand why they so often fail to do so.
