AFHeart: Like Dresden, the book is about a loner with parental issues who has natural powers. In the Kate Daniels series she is not used to having friends or trusting others because of her natural magic. Also like Dresden there is sexual tension but realistic, there is violence in fighting demons but it is not gory for the sake of gore. Kate Daniels books have more world building.… (mer)

Two down.

This time around, we're dealing with werewolves. And not just stereotypical werewolves, but a small pile of different forms. People that turn into wolves, people turned into wolves against their will, magic item based wolves... It's a lot. It's getting close (if not outright blowing past) the 'kitchen sink' world building that's rather common in urban fantasy. On the other hand, it's neat to see a few different takes on werewolves.

Another neat beat of world building comes in the form of Chauncy, a civilized (seeming) demon with a British accent who apparently knows far more about the larger world and Dresden's part in it than anyone else we've seen. It'll be interesting to see how/if that comes back in the future.

After that, we get a bit of growth for Dresden. Although he certainly respects some women's abilities (Murphy for example), he'll turn right on and go on about wanting to protect them. There's also the sexual descriptions of just about every single female character we meet (with several of them ending up naked at various times, because werewolf).

As a counterpart, the only male character that we get described is Marcone, who always has eyes like dollar bills. This is mentioned oddly often. He's still one of my favorite characters in the series. We know that he's not a 'good' man by just about anyone's definition, but at the same time, he does have his own code that he will stick to. He could be a very powerful enemy--or ally.

Plotwise, there are a few more twists this time, partially coming from the number of different parties involved and partially because we're tied to Dresden's (flawed) point of view. It's a nice change from Storm Front.

Overall, it's a stronger story than Storm Front and an excellent sequel.

Onwards! ( )

I liked the second book in the Dresden Files a bit better than the first, possibly because I knew a little more about the characters. Harry is called to a gruesome murder scene by his cop employer, head of Special Investigations, Karen Murphy, where the victim's face has been torn off and he has been eviscerated. Harry then learns that there were a series of murders around the last full moon, causing him to get a quick education on the various species of werewolves from his skull buddy, Bob. Some of the victims are tied to the big Chicago mob boss, who Harry dislikes. Murphy seems to distrust Harry, which seems silly, but there is much gore as Harry and some new friends have to battle foes from both sides of the law. 3.5 stars. ( )

Further establishes the universe in which Harry Dresden acts as a known wizard. Incredibly violent on one hand but good character development on the other. Butcher seems to become a better writer about half way through the book and things get a lot better. Enjoyable read. ( )

The 2nd Dresden Files book features a new mystery -- people are being killed by mysterious slashes that don't correspond with any weapon or animal. I preferred the first one in the series, more than this one, due to it's focus on mystery. While this one had that, I didn't feel the same A-HA! moment as before. ( )

I enjoyed the story. I still have a bit of a tough time with Harry's "chivalry" but the fact that he fully admits he's sort of a sexist but because he wants to treat a woman well and protect her helps me not want to punch him sometimes. But this book did have him feeling sorry for himself quite a bit. I feel like he did that in the last one, too, but it's been awhile.

I will probably read the next in the series at some point. I do like the characters and the story lines are dark and fun. ( )
