Considering that this book is a mere 307 pages, I can never quite believe how much story it has between its covers. From the very outset, Gaiman throws us a wholly unique plot centering around a haphazardly escaped child, who flees (completely by accident) from his family’s murder and winds up in a graveyard. The soon-named Nobody (Bod for short) Owens has a most unusual childhood, filled with ghosts, supernatural beings, and a singular Danse Macabré that defies explanation besides being utterly engaging and strangely intriguing. As Bod grows, small parts of the world Gaiman has created (a seemingly sideways, but not so far, reality from our own) are revealed, keeping us on the edges of our seats (and obviously turning page after page) to find out more about the Jacks of all Trades, the inner workings of Bod’s graveyard home, and the reason why Bod made it out of a murder scene alive. By the final pages of the book, I’m never quite sure I got all of the answers to the many questions raised therein, but I always come out completely satisfied. This is just one of those books that if you get it, it reveals some Truths about the world, and forever keeps you coming back for more. Do we want more of Bod, and his adventures? Yes, and maybe even more so, no - because maybe this gem is all we really need of his story. ( )

As with everything Gaiman ... extraordinary. ( )

A book about a boy raised in a graveyard and learning about the world from old-timey ghosts. What’s not to like?

Well… I wanted to like this book, but it couldn’t hold my attention. I read about 1/3 of the book, but I couldn’t connect to the characters and didn’t feel the plot was going in a cohesive direction. It’s my first time reading a book by Neil Gaiman, so it’s possible his style isn’t for me; however, there were enough intriguing threads in what I read that I’m open to trying out his other works.

The author does a great job of paying off foreshadowing in a satisfying way and immediately reminded me of the setup, even if the payoff itself didn’t resonate with me.

It wasn’t for me, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see positive reviews either. ( )

A mysterious killer murders a family but there is a little boy who is missing as he wandered off before the crime. Residents in a nearby graveyard take in this little boy. The deceased in the graveyard ghosts and the residents raise this boy further named Bod. Bod sneaks out of the graveyard due to a girl that has peaked his interest. As Bod becomes a teenager, he is set on a mission to find out who killed his family. This may not a book to read in a class but it sure is a good book for students to read in their independent time. The depiction of a murder and ghosts can appeal to certain students that intrigue them to read. ( )

Gaiman writes with charm and humor, and again he has a real winner.

Like a bite of dark Halloween chocolate, this novel proves rich, bittersweet and very satisfying.

This is fine work, from beginning to end, and the best bedtime story read-aloud material I've encountered in a long time. Can't wait until my daughter's old enough to read this to.

When the chilling moments do come, they are as genuinely frightening as only Gaiman can make them, and redeem any shortcomings.

While “The Graveyard Book” will entertain people of all ages, it’s especially a tale for children. Gaiman’s remarkable cemetery is a place that children more than anyone would want to visit. They would certainly want to look for Silas in his chapel, maybe climb down (if they were as brave as Bod) to the oldest burial chamber, or (if they were as reckless) search for the ghoul gate. Children will appreciate Bod’s occasional mistakes and bad manners, and relish his good acts and eventual great ones. The story’s language and humor are sophisticated, but Gaiman respects his readers and trusts them to understand.

Fortinbras Bartleby, ten years old when he had died (of consumption, he had told Bod, who had mistakenly believed for several years that Fortinbras had been eaten by lions or bears, and was extremely disappointed to learn it was merely a disease), now apologized to Bod.
“You’re always you, and that doesn’t change, and you’re always changing, and there’s nothing you can do about it.”
Nehemiah Trot said, “Ah, list to me, young Leander, young Hero, young Alexander. If you dare nothing, then when the day is over, nothing is all you will have gained.”
“And for that reason, if for no other, it is vital that the child be raised with as little disruption as possible to the, if you’ll forgive the expression, the life of the graveyard.”
"It's like the people who believe they'll be happy if they go and live somewhere else, but who learn it doesn't work that way. Wherever you go, you take yourself with you." p. 104
