Som vanligt är mysteriet mest underligt, speciellt hur Maigret nästan bara ramlar över precis saker som råkar vara viktiga för hans fall och nästan ingenting utöver det. Egentligen handlar böckerna mer om att återse Maigret, hans drickande, ätande, samliv med fru Maigret och vanor på Quai de Orfèvres, och här en del av lokalfärg från New York.
Inte bättre eller sämre än något annat, så kanske värt att plocka upp om man inte läst annat om Maigret, vill läsa allt om honom, eller är intresserad av just New York. Men har man läst Maigret och inte särskilt charmats kommer knappast det här få en att byta åsikt. ( )
