This collection of essays highlights a dimension of Paul's theology of justification that has been neglected -- that his teaching emerged as an integral part of his understanding of his commission to preach the gospel to non-Jews and that his dismissal of justification "by works of the law" was directed not so much against Jewish legalism but rather against his fellow Jews' assumption that the law remained a dividing wall separating Christian Jews from Christian Gentiles. James Dunn seeks to carry forward the debate on Jewish soteriology, on the relation of justification by faith to judgment "according to works," on Christian fulfillment of the law, and on the crucial role of Christ, his death and resurrection. Extremely exhaustive look at Dunn's work over the years defending and supporting this new perspective on Paul to different critics. While a good majority of this book was either over my head or referenced works I was not incredibly familiar with this was still an amazing resource to try and get a better understanding of the debates and what's really at stake. The initial essay which is brand new for the book and I around 100 pages is really a crucial starting point and an amazing work that gracefully
explains the debates that have been going in for a while and some of the origins. Really a fantastic book even if my lack of Greek limited my comprehension ( )

The most effective criticism of any position is one that thoroughly understands and fairly represents the position being critiqued. Anyone who wishes to give a fair hearing to Dunn's way of reading Paul, or who wishes thereby to be in a better position to show its deficiencies, will benefit greatly from the book, which is very clearly, engagingly, and accessibly written.
