It's got adventure and is a little tough in terms of the hardships this young boy is dealing with, but the writing is just perfect. It's set during the depression and deals with background issues of poverty, racism and classism in a subtle, effective way, but is mostly about dealing with loss and and how to keep building your life in the face of that loss. This book would we good for intermediate and lower-level middle grade students. It would be good representation in the classroom as well as good for small reading groups. The book is about an orphaned African American boy who escapes a home he is put in and sets out to find his father who turns out to be his grandpa. Being a Michigander, it was also cool to be reading about locations and cities I am familiar with. (
