The Sundowners av Jon Cleary (BonnieJune54)
BonnieJune54: Both novels have boys coming of age in a vividly described rural setting of another era. In both cases Mom, Dad and son are somewhat isolated from others. While life is harsh, joy , love and laughter are present.

"You figgered I went back on you. Now there's a thing ever' man has got to know. Mebbe you now it a'ready. Twan't only me... Boy, life goes back on you."

I was mesmerized. I never wanted it to end.

You become immersed in the world of the Baxter family - Penny (Pa), Ory (Ma), and 12-year-old Jody. They live post-Civil War in the Jacksonville area of Florida on a small clearing where they subsist growing corn, sweet potatoes, cow-peas, and cane sugar; augmented by a dairy cow and plenty of hunting. Their nearest neighbors are their frenemies the Forresters, a rough crowd of four or five grown men with their Ma and Pa. Jody has a special relationship with his Pa; not so much with Ma, who is hardened by having buried too many of her babies. Half the book goes by until the main plot commences - Jody finds Flag, an orphaned fawn he adopts, after having longed for years for some little creature he could care for and call his own. You know how it ends.

These people know their land so intimately, they know their game, their predators, their weather, in a way like I imagine most people today have no idea.

It was absolutely beautiful. I love coming-of-age stories. I'm partial to those with girls, and this is a boy's book through and through, but it was still about that magical portal between child and grown-up.

"Ever' man wants life to be a fine thing, and a easy. 'Tis fine, boy, powerful fine, but 'tain't easy. Life knocks a man down and he gits up and it knocks him down again. I've been uneasy all my life." ( )

A coming of age story of an adolescent boy named Jody Baxter set in the late 19th century, shortly after the Civil War, in a part of the country that could be called the United States's last frontier - the wilds of Florida.

Set against the lush and wild backdrop of Central Florida, in what is now the Ocala National Forest, we see Jody and his family struggle to eek out a living in a harsh land. There are flash floods, grazing of their crops; not to mention danger from panthers, wolves, and bears who find Jody's family's farm easy pickings for feeding time. At times, the Floridian landscape, with its abundant scrub, marshes, and oak hammocks, and wildlife, seems as much as a main character as the Baxter family members themselves. However, we see this landscape through Jody's young eyes.

Being isolated on "Baxter Island", an island of trees in the scrub, Jody is lonely. He is an only child of elderly parents, and his only friend lives miles away, which consists of an all-day walk there and back. When not tending the animals or crops on the farm, Jody daydreams and wanders the landscape looking for something to spark his imagination.

To salve his loneliness, Jody sweet talks his father in allowing him to keep an orphaned fawn. Jody is forced to grow up and leave behind his wandering, daydreaming, child-like ways, as he now is responsible for someone other to himself.

An excellent read. Lush landscape, real characters, and a heart-stirring coming of age tale for the ages. Highly recommend, especially for those middle-grade readers. ( )

A column of smoke rose thin and straight from the cabin chimney. The smoke was blue where it left the red of the clay. It trailed into the blue of the April sky and was no longer blue but gray. The boy Jody watched it, speculating. The fire on the kitchen hearth was dying down. His mother was hanging up pots and pans after the noon dinner. The day was Friday. She would sweep the floor with a broom of ti-ti and after that, if he were lucky, she would scrub it with the corn shucks scrub. If she scrubbed the floor she would not miss him until he had reached the Glen. He stood a minute, balancing the hoe on his shoulder.
