On 8th March 1965, in response to intense communist activity throughout Sooth Vietnam, the US 9th Marine Brigade landed at Danang and went into the immediate action against communist forces attacking US military installations. Thus began the start of a massive infusion of American military personnel and aid into South Vietnam, which heralded eight years of brutal engagements which cost 50,000 American lives, led to political and social entanglements, and where the greatest military and industrial power on earth unleashed thousands of tons of ordnance against an enemy rarely seen, where battles consisted of clashes at platoon or battalion level only, and where the images of the war could be viewed daily on television in American homes. The Vietnam War Day by Day is a chronological, month-by-month approach to the conflict, allowing the reader to see at a glance the key operations on land, at sea and in the air, such as 'Cedar Falls', 'Junction City', 'Rolling Thunder' and the Tet Offensive. These operations and other engagements are illustrated by maps for ease of understanding. As well as the battles and campaigns, the book contains all the military and political leaders of both sides who helped to shape the conflict, such as Westmoreland, Giap, Nixon, Kissinger, Abrams and Le Duc Tho.Although the major events of each month dominate the narrative, The Vietnam War Day by Day also includes lesser episodes to give the reader a comprehensive summary of the war. These include drug trafficking, rates of venereal disease, which had reached 700 per 1000 men by 1972, American prisoners of war, and the enormous black market in South Vietnam. The Vietnam War Day by Day is a superbly illustratedaccount of America's most tragic war.… (mer)
