THE PRICE OF ASHES is an historical fiction novel which tells the story of Amalie Stein, the daughter of liberal Austrian jews, & how she marries Gunther Metzdorf, a front-line veteran of the Austrian Army during the First World War. Amalie wants to leave her Jewish past behind & assimilate into German society as Gunther sends for her & his son, Jakob, to join him in Munich after the war, but events take a strange turn as Gunther becomes swept up in the street fighting in Munich during a revolutionary uprising which sweeps across Germany. Gunther's hatred of the communists after the revolution leads him to join a small right-wing political party which eventually flourishes under the new leadership of Adolf Hitler & becomes known throughout the world as "the Nazis". It's hard to label THE PRICE OF ASHES as it carefully weaves its way through the revolution in Germany after the First World War, the Weimar years & the rise & fall of the Nazi party. There is at once the doomed love story of Amalie & Gunther along with each one's fight for their son's heart & soul. There is also the spy story that brings the work to its dramatic conclusion as the story flows from Munich to Salzburg & Prague in the shadow of the Second World War, illuminating strange, dark secrets of history.
