Ken is far removed from sharing Tibetological or Orientalist prejudices. On the contrary, as mentioned, he spent three years in Tibetan monastic universities as a participant observer or simply as a participant in ongoing practices. As he stresses repeatedly in his book, to properly understand Tibetan culture and philosophy it is necessary to exit from the Western ivory tower and to immerse oneself in situ and in vivo practices. ‘‘To read a text in a Tibetan way,’’ he says (p. 16), ‘‘is a necessary requirement for understanding Tibetan philosophical practice.’’ What matters here is that ‘‘‘reading’ in a Tibetan monastic university differs greatly from ‘reading’ in a European university’’ where reading is ‘‘a much more individualized experience.’’ The upshot of this argument is that ‘‘a sound cultural hermeneutics would seek to fathom the context in which indigenous readings are made.’’ Uppmärksammade listor
