I remember that this book washed over me, fresh from devouring "From Russia With Love" with the "Flash of Recognition". The grip of reality had me, and never thereafter did I look on the simple world of the spy story in the same way! Fleming wrote the fantasy of intelligence work, Deighton of its nuts and bolts, but John Le Carre gave me the cost of entering that world. It was some time before I returned to it. My original copy must have been a library copy probably from Gollanz. Vrolijk word je hier niet van. Maar puik boek, dat wel en graag gelezen. John Le Carré voert onze vriend George Smiley op in de coulissen van een op het scherp van de snee gespeeld spionageduel tussen de Britten, de Oost-Duitsers en de Russen. Alec Leamas, die zijn Duitse spionagenetwerk opgerold zag door zijn tegenpool Mundt, wordt toch opnieuw het veld in gestuurd om Mundt uit te schakelen. Wat volgt is een strak en ingenieus uitgewerkt verhaal waar de personages zelf ook niet zeker zijn van hun eigen rol in het verhaal. Toch orchestreert Le Carré je als lezer vlot en zonder haperen naar een uitmuntende plot. De beschouwingen die je van zijn personages in de slotfase meekrijgt maken je niet meteen vrolijk en ook de soms grimmige sfeer en het gebrek aan empathie van het poppenspel waarin Le Carré je meeneemt zijn best confronterend. Maar goed geschreven en meeslepend: absoluut. Een boek dat begint en eindigt met de oversteek van de muur tussen Oost- & West-Berlijn, met mannen achter kranten en wandelingen onder kapotte straatlampen: het lijkt intussen cliché, maar Le Carré beheerst het als de beste en serveert steeds op een bed van echte personages en geloofwaardige karakters. If the same company/crew who recently filmed Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy were to do a new adaptation of this one, I'm sure it would be a brilliant film (even if it doesn't have Richard Burton). What matters is that it belongs on the same shelf. Here is a book a light year removed from the sometimes entertaining trivia which have (in the guise of spy novels) cluttered the publishers' lists for the past year.
