In 1869 as part of Grant's "Peace Policy," Quaker farmer Lawrie Tatum left his farm in Iowa to serve as an Indian agent of the US government with the Kiowa and Comanche Indians at Fort Sill in Indian Territory. This pamphlet relates his story as an Indian agent between 1869 and 1873. This is a very interesting pamphlet about a Quaker Indian agent after the American Civil War. Committed to peaceful ways, he tried to get war-like tribes, Kiowas and Comanches, who were committed to their warrior cultures, to move to a reservation, start farming, and give up raiding, killing, and taking captives. He was liked and trusted, but ultimately unsuccessful and frustrated. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
