Pablito is given a little yellow pig to keep as a pet by his Grandfather. They become the best of friends and they do everything together. One day Pablito comes home from school to find that Amarillo, the pig, is gone. He asks everyone if they have seen the pig and he shouts for the pig, all to no avail. Pablito is distraught, unable to eat or sleep. His grandpa carves a wooden pig for him, but it does not bring him comfort. His grandfather tells him that perhaps the pig has died and asks him if he would like to send the pig a message on All Saint's Day. Pablito creates a kite to carry his message to Amarillo conveying his love, grief and loss. Soon a cloud that looks like a smiling pig is spotted by the boy and his grandfather. Bringing a sense of Peace to the boy.

Pablito gets a small yellow pig from his grandfather, and they become the best of friends. One day when Pablito comes home from school Amarillo is gone. Pablito waits for him but his pig does not come home. His grandfather tells him that his pig may have gotten in an accident and died, and that he is in peace with angels in the sky, but Pablito feels that his heart is broken because he will never have his best friend Amarillo with him again. He gets an idea to make a kite to set free on All Saint's Day so that his pig will see the sign, and on All Saint's Day he sets his kite free. It floats off into a cloud that looks like Amarillo, and Pablito is very happy that he has found his best friend again and tells him that he will always love him.

A story of a young Guatemalan boy who loses his beloved pig is a masterpiece of picture-book making. One day Pablito's grandfather brings him a tiny yellow pig on a leash. The pictures show his excitement and the developing bond between boy and pig. One day when Pablito returns from school, Amarillo is nowhere to be found. Surrounded by barnyard birds and the family cat and dog, Pablito looks in vain for his best friend. Neither mother and sister, weaving colorful fabric, nor father driving an equally colorful bus, has seen him. The previously white background darkens, and the bright colors fade. Pablito pushes his plate away at the dinner table and the whole family visibly shares his sorrow. Alone at night, illuminated by a single candle, Pablito cries into his pillow. Finally, there is resolution on All Saints' Day, with its traditional kite-flying to send messages to loved ones who've died. The pacing of text and pictures, the sense of movement, and the use of space, line, and color are perfect on every page. Sure to become a classic. 2003, Philomel, $15.99. Category: Picture book. Ages 4 to 8.
