I had to muddle through the first few chapters and get in the proper mood to read this book, but once I accustomed myself to the writing style and the world that Fforde created, it was a delightfully fun read. I had a hard time getting into this one, but once I accepted that I wouldn't really understand all of it until I read more of the classics and drink more, I was able to enjoy it more. I started out not liking it, but found myself smiling at the humor in it---especially on the last 100 pages. Shoot, I think I might even miss Thursday. Fun romp in an alternate universe full of literature jokes, dodo birds, and time jumping. I typically dislike police procedurals and detective stores, but this had enough fun elements to overshadow that part of the book for me. Thursday is a bit of a straight woman in a weird world, but a relatively interesting character with some demons. Not too deep, a bit cutesy, but a fun diversion. This book starts off SLOW. I didn't care for the punny and random/quirky nature in the first half, but once we got to the Jane Eyre parts, I enjoyed the meta parts a lot more. I think there should be more interaction with the Jane Eyre and living-inside-a-book plot, because the rest was not as interesting or engaging for me. 3.5 stars.
Fforde wears the marks of his literary forebears proudly on his sleeve, from Lewis Carroll and Wodehouse to Douglas Adams and Monty Python, in both inventiveness and sense of fun. Fforde delivers almost every sentence with a sly wink, and he's got an easy way with wordplay, trivia and inside jokes. ''The Eyre Affair'' can be too clever by half, and fiction like this is certainly an acquired taste, but Fforde's verve is rarely less than infectious. A good editor might have trimmed away some of the annoying padding of this novel and helped the author to assimilate his heavy borrowings from other artists, but no matter: by the end of the novel, Mr. Fforde has, however belatedly, found his own exuberant voice. THE EYRE AFFAIR is mostly a collection of jokes, conceits and puzzles. It's smart, frisky and sheer catnip for former English majors....And some of the jokes are clever indeed. Dark, funny, complex, and inventive, THE EYRE AFFAIR is a breath of fresh air and easily one of the strongest debuts in years. There is another 1985, somewhere in the could-have-been, where dodos are regenerated in home-cloning kits and everyone is disappointed by the ending of Jane Eyre. But in this world there are policemen who can travel across time, a Welsh republic - and a woman called Thursday Next. Inga biblioteksbeskrivningar kunde hittas. |

I think this book, and the entire series will appeal to any Biliophibian who is used to losing themselves entirely in a book. The conceit that one can, in fact enter a book, and Fforde's enjoyably ridiculous alternate universe makes for a very enjoyable read. I'd certainly like to attend one of Swindon's Richard II nights, which I think I'd enjoy as much or more than a good Rocky Horror showing. (
