Arthur Ransome belonged to that world we have lost in which nothing was more natural, commonplace and necessary than the writing and receiving of letters. (Introduction) All visitors to the Kremlin in Moscow will agree, one of the most impressive sights in the fortress is the Great Bell, so tall and heavy that it cracked during its casting and could never be rung.

Avslutande ord |
Information från den engelska sidan med allmänna fakta. Redigera om du vill anpassa till ditt språk. There would be no more signalling from Mars or anywhere else. But his ending was tranquil. Rupert Hart-Davis responded to Evgenia's appeal, like the true friend he was, and perhaps his words in the epilogue to the Autobiography make the most suitable end to this volume too:
'... he lingered on for twenty months, not noticeably unhappy and only occasionally conscious of his surroundings. He died peacefully on June 3, 1967, and lies buried, surrounded by his beloved hills, rivers and lakes, in the lovely valley of Rusland.' (Klicka för att visa. Varning: Kan innehålla spoilers.)
