"Errol Flynn could have been tried for treason. The world-famous star could have ended his life on the hangman's noose." In this astonishing statement, best-selling author Charles Higham sums up a theme of his major new biography of the superstar. Behind the fame, the magical movie career that made Flynn a symbol of heroism adn patriotic adventure, there was hidden a horrifying secret: he was a spy for the Gestapo, working in harness with a leading SS man, Dr. Hermann F. Erben. Aided by the FBI, army and navy intelligence, and the State Department, Charles Higham has woven a spellbinding story of espionage and doublecross. He shows the industry coverup that hid Flynn's activities from an unsuspecting public. And the audacious maneuver by which Flynn used Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt's friendship and trust as an unwitting cover for his treasonable mission. Along with this amazing story, the book discloses Flynn's previously unrevealed sexual encounters with Howard Hughes and Tyrone Power, both of whom were also bisexual; and his one-night stand in New York with Truman Capote. Higham discusses Flynn's activities as international criminal; compulsive thief; committer of manslaughter; smuggler of gold, guns, and drugs. We see Flynn as a man in constant danger. While the career soared in such classics as The Adventures of Robin Hood, Captain Blood and Gentlemen Jim, the macho star was threatened by exposure, ruin, and execution. This undercurrent of suspense makes Errol Flynn: The Untold Story a true-life thriller - which comes to an unforgettable climax in the scavenger-filled streets of postwar Shanghai. -- from dust jacket.… (mer)

I believe Mr. Higham is often found writing celebrity biographies. This book is not particularly engaging. Mr. Flynn fell into the acting business and did do it well. His friends didn't take very good care of him, and neither did he. He has some high points, as Dr. Blood, in "Captain Blood" and a believable "Robin Hood", but he wasn't interesting except as an example of harmful self-indulgence. I read for information and not for inspiration. ( )
