I have known about Shreve since I have been At a spiffy co-ed private prep school in Vermont, three star basketball players take a freshman girl age 14, to a dorm room for what becomes, an orgy. Two years later a researcher contacts all of the people involved and asks if she can interview them for a study on alcohol and the teenage boy. She interviews, the players, their parents, the headmaster, the girl, the girl friend of one of the players, a reporter, and others involved in the incident. Bit by bit we learn what happened and how lives were ruined by the thoughtless, stupid, dangerous actions of the boys. It is a fascinating story. The book reminds me of Jodi Piccoult’s novels where the plot is revealed slowly through the eyes of the characters. A wonderful, heartbreaking portrait. A little brief, but what is there is riveting. I certainly feel there was more story to explore- I would have liked to have heard from Noelle again. I would have liked to have heard more from Silas' uncle, the police officer. Perhaps to have seen J.Dot or Rob make appearances in other chapters so we could assess them from another angle. Most of all, I would have liked Sienna to have been more rounded, less blatantly opportunistic and manipulative. It would have added a level of depth that knocks this parable out of the top tier. I listened to the full cast audiobook, and give both the cast and the production high marks (thank you to the editor who decided to start each chapter with the name of the speaker). Wow, a book that really makes you think about what the youth of today are facing, private schools or public schools. I was afraid something had happened to Silas, a lot of foreshadowing with him. How sad. Definitely something to think about how one little thoughtless act can have so many consequences. Is the terrible act the one in the dorm or the adulterous affair? Both had serious consequences that were all tied in together. I really enjoyed this book. I have not read much Anita Shreve but this book was well-written and a real page-turner. It revolves around a single incident at a boarding school and each short chapter is, in essence, a testimony about the ripple effect that this incident has had on those involved and those around them. It's interesting to piece together the story as you go along and figure out the relationships between characters. I do recommend this one.
This is my second read for this author and I have to say, I am underwhelmed... after reading Rescue, I was looking forward to reading more by Anita Shreve but Testimony seemed to miss the mark. A very enticing topic, I thought this book held a lot of promise. However, I found that the book lacked organization and that would be it's main downfall, in my opinion. It seemed to jump from year-to-year without mention of when it was and while this is normally not an issue, it was hard to figure out and I spend unnecessary time figuring it out. Also, the jumping from character to character, when added to the year-to-year jumping, was very confusing. Having so many characters involved, I almost needed a family tree/chart to keep track of who each person was and what their involvement in the story/crime was... very hard to track. On a whole, the story was very good. I enjoyed the plot and I liked the twist that comes towards the end, regarding Silas and his family. It was very unexpected and definitely made me read that much harder to get to the bottom of the story. Overall, I am glad that I have read this book and being at a 50% for the author, I will give her another try. I would encourage every parent of a teenage girl to give her a copy of Testimony. Certainly, it contains several passages that are bleakly obscene. But it also offers girls the exact kind of story they want to read
At a New England boarding school, a sex scandal is about to break. Even more shocking than the sexual acts themselves is the fact that they were caught on videotape. A Pandora's box of revelations, the tape triggers a chorus of voices--those of the men, women, teenagers, and parents involved in the scandal--that details the ways in which lives can be derailed or destroyed in one foolish moment.
