A book chose to read aloud to a fifth grade class over zoom! Teaching points: female power in politics, us history and government, democracy and fair voting and equal rights, don't let the doubt of others get to you
genre: fiction ( )

I loved this book! I think this book should be read to all elementary students. It should be used to show that minorities and gender biases don’t matter when it comes to your dreams and what you want to do. In this book Grace wants to be president when she learns that America has never had a female president. She goes off into holding mock elections at her school. This is a great book for exposing children to hard work, courage and the electoral voting system in America. ( )

This is one of my favorite picture books. This story is about Grace, and she does not understand why they aren't any female presidents. She decides she wants to run in her class election against the most popular boy in her class. It does a really good job of teaching young children about the Electoral Collage and democracy. It also is encouraging to young girls that they can do anything, even run for president. The plot is organized and easy to follow. The illustrations also align directly with the text. ( )

This book is about a girl named Grace who is inspired to run for class president and beat the boy who she is running against. She wants to be the first female president. I enjoy this book because it teaches about the Electoral College. Also, it promotes gender equality and just because you are a girl doesn't mean that you can't be president. This book could inspire children in the classroom to be bold and follow their dreams. ( )

Grace for President is a children’s fiction book written by Kelly DiPucchio and illustrated by LeUyen Pham. This picture book was published by Disney-Hyperion Books in 2008. It is most suitable for grades 1-3rd. When her teacher brings out a big poster of all the presidents, Grace has one question: “Where are the girls”? In this book, her teacher decides to hold an election for school president and Grace is running against a boy from another class. I like that this book pushes readers to learn and think about the process of electing a president. For example, the other students get to randomly choose a state to represent and learn about electoral votes. Students learn some facts about the process through an engaging illustrated book and can learn more from the acknowledgements in the back. The big idea in the book is that the best person for the job was picked -whether they were boy or girl was not the most important. I liked that the main character was an African American girl named Grace and how she was illustrated to have brown skin and natural hair -diversity and representation in books is very important. I also liked the illustrations because the style fit the story very well and was engaging. One page showed what Grace did to campaign and had pins and posters all over as well as images of her giving speeches on the playground, giving out cupcakes, and handing out her fliers. This book was fun to read and interesting.
