Roberto Arlt’s first novel (1926) is a bildungsroman from the immigrant streets of Buenos Aires and a rejection of the literary conventions of an earlier generation that saw Argentina as an outpost of high European culture. For the young narrator, inspired by tales of bandits and anarchists, both poetry and petty thievery are forms of freedom. Arlt presents the hunger for adventure and the pursuit of the romantic outlaw life of the mind as a combination of resentment and excitement—a sense of betrayal at the ‘fatal indifference’ that seems to pervade the city, but then the realization that despair may be an essential element in the unshackling of the imagination. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
