Dick Young has been friends with biophysicist Magnus Lane for many years; when the latter invites the former to stay by himself at Magnus’s home in Cornwall for a holiday, Dick is pleased to do so. He has recently quit his publishing job in London and his wife Vita, an American, wants him to take a similar job with her brother and move to New York, but Dick doesn’t really want to go. At Kilmarth, Magnus’s home, he learns of a new drug that Magnus has developed, one that he agrees to take as a favor to his friend and one which transports him back to 14th Century Cornwall. He has no agency there, but is able to witness events and relationships among various landed families - and he is able to fall in love with one of them…. I was reminded a lot of another time-travel novel, “A Traveller in Time” by Alison Uttley, published in 1939 and having to do with a young girl who, recovering in the country from a serious illness, finds herself transported to the time of Elizabeth I and her great rival, Mary Queen of Scots; the mechanisms are different, but the methods of story-telling are similar. Du Maurier’s book was published in 1969, and the parallels to youth-culture drug use of the time are no doubt intended, although the characters are not part of that culture themselves. I found the book a little slow in the beginning, which I attribute more to my being more used to the swifter pace of modern novels than to any flaw in the book itself, and within a few chapters I was quite hooked. And I loved that one of the symptoms of Dick’s increasing dependence on the drug was, quite clearly to women anyway, a problem of hot flashes! Interesting read; recommended if you can find it. ( )

Liked the concept of time travel through an unproven drug. Did not care for the relationships of the families in the past and really only liked the man servant Roger. In the present time did not care for any of the characters except for the professor Magnus. Was surprised at the way everything turned out for the main character - losing his friend, his honesty to the doctor, becoming an addiction for needing to go back in time. ( )

Initially,it was confusing but the plot quickly came together. The time travel story quickly becomes a tale of addiction and is an unusual horror to say the least. ( )

This book by the author of the well known book, Rebecca is a story of Dick Young, a married man, father to two step children who is a bit bored with life. His friend , Professor Magnus, offers him an escape to his place in Cornwall and another escape through a new drug. With this new drug, Dick is able to transport to 14th century Cornwall where he is a passive observer of events. The book was published in 1969 and is the author's last successful publication. It is set in Cornwall, a mysterious mansion with romantic incidents of a Gothic novel. This book is one of her later books, written when the author is in her sixties and explores human identity and paranormal experience. The book explores the male relationship between Richard and his friend Magnus. Richard's wife, Vita (life) is the mother of two sons from a prior relationship and Dick is less than happy in his relationship with his sophisticated wife. There is little evidence of love between the couple. There is a lot of allusions to gay sex in this book and is also written in the time period of the sixties drug culture especially psychedelic drugs like mushrooms and LSD. ( )

Introduction
The simple and instant response to The House on the Strand is that it is a novel revisiting the themes expected of Daphne du Maurier, all about Cornwall, set in a mysterious mansion, and featuring romantic episodes in the region's history.
The first thing I noticed was the clarity of the air, and then the sharp green colour of the land.

Never before, neither in my own world nor on the previous occasions when I strayed into the other, had I felt such a sense of unity. I was one of them, and they did not know it. I belonged amongst them, and they did not know it. This, I think, was the essence of what it meant to be me. To be bound, yet free; to be alone, yet in their company; to be born in my own time yet living, unknown, in theirs. (102)
"We're far too wrapped up in ourselves to encourage ghosts. Poor things, they'd wither away from tedium, unable to draw attention to themselves."
Could time be all-dimensional—yesterday, today, tomorrow running concurrently in ceaseless repetition?
When I lie I like to base the lie on a foundation of fact, for it appeases not only the conscience but a sense of justice.
. . . I thought how this thing of how well or how badly one had slept was really the great test of marital relationship; if one partner came off poorly during the night hours the other was immediately to blame, and the following day would come apart in consequence.
