A really fascinating story. Although the narrative is focused on fundamental Mormonism, much of this book strikes shockingly close to what it is to be American. The bravado and charm of Joseph Smith, Brigham Young's unflinching and tenacious belief that his doctrine was right. The sort of grim optimism of a people who look forward to the day that what they know to be true is confirmed, woe to those who didn't believe. It can all be reinterpreted shades of Manifest Destiny and the making of America. Of course there are major diversions: plural marriage, child abuse, rape, religious extremism, and a terrible and shocking murder. But the strength of Krakauer's writing lies in his ability to relay sensational information, without sensationalizing the narrative. ( )

I knew a bit about Mormons and their history from having hiked in Utah, but this book filled in a lot more I’d read Into Thin Air and I find Krakauer very engaging, very readable. ( )

This book was not what I expected it to be but was still very interesting. I expected it to be more about the murder case but this book was comprised mostly of Mormon history, with bits about the murder thrown in when it made sense. Still, this was a very interesting topic. My family is not particularly religious so I don't know much about any religion, let alone Mormonism. I don't always love Krakauer's writing style. I find it to be a bit too whimsical sometimes. You can almost imagine it as a bad documentary with really cheezy music in the background. This is one of his earlier books so those issues are definitely there but I didn't have any major complaints about the writing. Some of the Mormon history sections were quite tedious. A lot of it was necessary and helpful for getting a true picture of the religion but some of just felt too in-depth for this story and I was bored at some parts. I did like this story and it was a very interesting read. ( )

Krakauer tells a story of the Mormon religion from the beginning. Parts of it were fascinating to me, as I knew hardly nothing about it. Interwoven into this is the story of the murders of Brenda and her baby Erica Lafferty. Murdered by her brother-in-laws, simply because she chose to speak out about their involvement in a Fundamentalist Sect of the religion. What was more outrageous was the fact that there were people who knew the murder was going to take place-not when, not where, but still they had knowledge that is was going to happen.

Not one of my favorites by this author. I wanted to like this book more, but at times it really dragged it for me. Still, it was an intense work and effort in revealing what brain-washing can do to people who are already lost. I only recommend this to those who want a total picture of the Mormon religion and the FLDS. ( )

His project is ambitious: With Mormon fundamentalism as his chief illustration, he seeks to understand why religious extremism flourishes in a skeptical, postmodern society. . . . The result is a book that is both insightful and flawed.

Krakauer's knowledge of polygamist communities in Canada and on the Arizona-Utah border and how they tie to Utahns and various organized groups is enlightening.
...
Krakauer's thesis is less convincing when he tries to explain the historical roots of polygamist fundamentalism by a brief and, at times, confused survey of Mormon history. ... Krakauer's thesis has greater authenticity when applied to radical fundamentalism of any form or in any religion. In searching for evidences to document his thesis, the author overlooked sources that explain the LDS church's evolution away from polygamy.
...
This is a haunting book because it is a reminder of Utah at its worst.

SINCE Sept. 11, 2001, Americans have talked a lot about the dark side of religion, but for the most part it isn't religion in America they've had in mind. Jon Krakauer wants to broaden their perspective. In ''Under the Banner of Heaven,'' he enters the obscure world of Mormon fundamentalism to tell a story of, as he puts it, ''faith-based violence.''

We believe in honesty, morality and purity; but when they enact tyrannical laws, forbidding us the free exercise of our religion, we cannot submit. God is greater than the United States, and when the Government conflicts with heaven, we will be ranged under the banner of heaven and against the government... Polygamy is a divine institution. it has been handed down direct from God. The United States cannot abolish it. No nation on earth can prevent it, nor all the nations of the earth combined, ... I defy the United States; I will obey God.

No western nation is as religion-soaked as ours, where nine out of ten of us love God and are loved by him in return. That mutual passion centers our society and demands some understanding, if our doom-eager society is to be understood at all.

THE AMERICAN RELIGION
Prologue
Almost everyone in Utah County has heard of the Lafferty boys.
PART 1
The schisms that shattered Mormonism time and again, more critical tha inroads from without, only attest its strength. They were signs of the seriousness with which converts and dissenters took their salvation, ready to stake their souls on points of doctrine which a later, less Biblical generation could treat with indifference. Almost everyone in Utah County has heard of the Lafferty boys. That's mostly a function of the lurid murders, of course, but the Lafferty surname had a certain prominence in the county even before Brenda and Erica Lafferty were killed.
