I really liked this book because it shows how family is important and that you should help others. In the book Miss Spider is about to have babies and feels that she isn't prepared and won't be a good mother. When her babies hatch, one of them, Squirt, finds an egg that does not seem to have a mother. Without asking Miss Spider or her husband, Holley, Squirt takes the egg to search for it's mother. Miss Spider gets very upset that one of her children is missing and begins to question whether or not she should be a mother. Miss Spider and Holley leave their children with their friend and go looking for Squirt. On Squirt's journey he encounters a mean snake, but he also meets some new friends that don't have a mother. His new friends join him on his search for the egg's mother. Finally, Squirt and his new friends find the egg's mother, but a hen tries to eat him. Just in time, Miss Spider swoops in to save Squirt and is deemed the best mom in all of Sunny Patch. Miss Spider and Holley also adopt the friends Squirt made on his journey to find the lost egg's mom. I really liked the writing in this because every two lines rhymed which I think made the book flow very nicely and made it easy to read. For example, one part of the text says, "The sun arose on Sunny Patch and smiled away the snow. Our little friends came up for air, and choked,'It's time to go!'" When reading the book aloud, the words rolled right off my tongue so I think it would be easy for a child to read. I also really liked the illustrations. It looks like they were done on a computer and the bugs all look really realistic. There is one page where Squirt's friend, Stinky's, eyes seem to be popping off of the page which I thought was really cool. The big idea of this book is that family is really important and you should help and accept new people into your family. ( )

Like all new parents-to-be, Miss Spider and Holly worry. "Do babies bite? Do they need sun? Why do they wiggle so?!" Most of all they worry, "Will we be good parents?" But not to fear. When their ten little egglings hatch and there are eight booties knitted just in time for everyone, Miss Spider and Holly discover that love at the heart of a family turns worries into bundles of joy.

The best thing about this particular book is the fact that Miss Spider adopts babies who are not spiders. I think teaching kids that loving families don't all look alike is a powerful message. It's never too early to start those good messages. ( )
