Though she is now remarried, Pia has never really gotten over her first husband's death. Her new husband travels most of the time leaving her alone in their pristine home, surrounded by white walls, white furniture, white carpeting. White, white, white. She keeps in touch, by phone, with her sister Lily, who, through a tragic and innocent mistake, was responsible for the death of her niece in a car accident and is now serving time in jail. Pia also talks to her sister-in-law, Beth, the grieving mother of the dead girl. Surrounded by these tragedies, Pia views the world as a threat to her hard-earned, peaceful--if lonely--way of life. She leaves the house only once a week; to visit her doctor. One day, on her way there, she stumbles across a hidden antique store and ventures inside. Like Alice, tumbling down the rabbit hole, the store--and its exotic owner--open her up to a whole new existence, one of swirling colors and chaotic feelings, of longing, desire and a new lust for life.… (mer)

Intriguing set-up and the story is told from three different viewpoints: Pia and Lily, who are sisters, and Beth, who is their sister-in-law. Pia has recently been widowed, and Lily is in prison for manslaughter. The person she is convicted of killing is her brother and Beth's young daughter. Ultimately, I found Lily's and Beth's stories compelling, but Pia's life took some very bizarre turns that were completely out of character, even given the loss of her husband, and I lost interest in her and whatever planet she was living on very quickly. I wish the author would have done more with Lily and Beth and and left Pia by the wayside. Promising book that turned out to be somewhat disappointing. ( )

Took a break from reading another book, finished this in two days. It was OK, nothing special, skimmed over some boring parts. ( )

The Secret Sisters holds a place among my favorite books. Ms. Rodgers managed to use a different style of writing to evoke each of three women—making each character all the more believable. Each word is so well chosen to evoke mood and emotion. I found myself laughing and near tears as I followed each of these sisters through the recovery from life-stopping tragedies. Even while enjoying one sister’s story I eagerly anticipated reaching the point where I would be able to discover more about the other two. Tied together by loss these sisters each seemed to be experience a rebirth of sorts. While only Lily obviously anticipated hers the other two sisters also found renewal. What a wonderful story of hope in the face of unimaginable grief. I highly recommend The Secret Sisters and I look forward to future works by Ms. Rodgers. ( )

I agree pretty much with the review below. I did not like this book.
***
Kirkus Reviews A drunk-driving accident has dire ramifications for a tight-knit family.
Rodgers's third novel (Bald in the Land of Big Hair, 2001, etc.) is told in alternating chapters from the points of view of sisters Pia and Lily and their sister-in-law Beth. All three are self-centered and savor wallowing in grief. Despite the gut-wrenching losses they suffer, these women remain remarkably shallow and unenlightened. Pia's husband collapses and dies in the novel's first few pages. She remarries out of desperation and proceeds to have a nervous breakdown that's recounted in clichéd metaphors. Lily rivals her sister when it comes to doling out self-pity. Serving out a seven-year prison sentence for killing her five-year-old niece in a drunken driving accident, she is bitter, foul-mouthed and reckless. Although Lily wrestles with the shame of her conviction, she is never repentant, and, aside from a few humorously caustic jabs at her prison mates, remains fairly intolerable. Finally, there is Beth, the dependable, sanctimonious, holy-roller of the family. Beth lost her daughter in the car accident and is harboring some severe hatred toward her in-laws. Her pent-up righteousness is dull.
It's a slog following these three women through so many pages of depressing action before the slightest bit of sunshine is revealed in an ending that's neither satisfying nor shocking.
