I liked reading this story because it showed how the main character overcame an obstacle. This is a modern fantasy since the main character, Miss Violet, is a rabbit that lives in a house, works in a button factory, and learns to play the trombone. Each page has a detailed illustration that brings the reader in. For example, when Miss Violet is on her walk, the illustrations show all the things she saw on her walk and the basket of carrots and strawberries. This emphasizes what was written on the page for readers who may not have understood. The language used was descriptive and helped create an image in my mind. For example, “weekends, she went for walks in the country, collecting colored pebbles and wildflowers.” The author did a good job of explaining where Miss Violet went for walks, what kind of pebbles she collected and what type of flowers. The characters, Miss Violet and her new friend Sir Dewlap were believable which helped add to the story. Sir Dewlap was helping Miss Violet learn how to play the trombone. This is believable and relatable to children because at some point they will be learning new things from their peers. Another example is when the author writes, “Her heart raced when sound came out.” This adds effect to making the story more believable because Miss Violet’s heart is racing. The theme of the story is to learn to overcome your fears. Miss Violet was scared to play the trombone in front of the town but she decided to take a chance. After she finished playing everybody loved what they heard and the audience was cheering for more. This made Miss Violet feel happy and accomplished. Through her experience of learning to play the trombone, she made many new friends and started a band. The theme of the story is relevant because people have to overcome their fears every day. The author did a good job of showing positive outcomes from being brave. ( )
