In a suburb on the outskirts of Tokyo, four teenage girls drift through a hot smoggy August and tedious summer school classes. There's dependable Toshi; brainy Terauchi; Yuzan, grief-stricken and confused; and Kirarin, whose late nights and reckless behaviour remain a secret from those around her. Then Toshi's next-door neighbour is found brutally murdered and the girls suspect Worm, the neighbour's son and a high school misfit. But when he disappears (taking Toshi's bike and cell phone with him) the four girls become irresistibly drawn into a treacherous vortex of brutality and seduction which rises from within themselves as well as the world around them.… (mer)

An okay novel, more exciting for its structure and creative use of POV in each chapter. Overall, I liked this book second out of her three English translations, with Out being first and Grotesque third. ( )

The fourth book of my Japanese Odyssey.

This is another book where the main characters are young adults so I tend to think that the intended audience is that age group.

This one starts off with an implausible scenario and equally unlikely follow-up actions that, whilst they stretch the suspension of disbelief muscles, do fit within the genre if I am correct about the intended age group.

For the first half of the book I found it a bit tedious but either the book deepened out into some serious character analysis or I lowered my expectations :-)

So as I read on, the last half of the book was finely crafted and the ending whilst unexpected (by me) was coherent to the overall story. The final part of the book I found quite moving.

I find that I am becoming accustomed to all the weirdness of Japanese culture. So when the father of the bad boy drops to his knees and hangs his head in shame in front of the schoolgirl I fully understood the import of that action.

Overall 3 stars, worth a read if you are a young adult and are curious what it's like to be one in Japan. ( )

After reading Out, I felt something was lacking in Natsuo Kirino's fiction. The failure of Real World underscores that assessment. Out revolved around the plot of a group of middle aged women plotting death and revenge in a cold manner that seemed sociopathic. Real World centers itself on a group of four high school girls acting similarly, albeit with the instigator a high school boy who energizes the girls into fleeing to an emotional dead zone. Is this what contemporary Japan is doing to its people, from middle age to teen years, sucking morality out of their existence? Seems so. Families don't thrive; they commit suicide against a backdrop of a glut of consumer society obsessed with forms over self realization. As presented the message is superficial. The form is trite. ( )

This is one of those books that has been on my shelves for seemingly ever, or at least since before I joined GR 8 years ago. I was looking for a book set in Asia, and came across Real World by Natsuo Kirino, about five teens in Tokyo who are unhappy about their lives.

I don't know if the translation is to blame, I read it in Dutch, but I had a very hard time liking this book. Each chapter is from a different POV as four teenage girls come into contact with with another teen, who has just murdered is mother. All are discontent about various aspects of their lives.

I didn't like it. If anything, I thought the ending was quite strong and redeemed the story a little bit. Which is why I settled for 2 stars. I wouldn't pick up another Kirino book soon I think, but I'm glad I got to read one of the oldest books of the TBR. ( )
