From the editor's notes: "...Professor James Luther Adams of Boston University, the University of Chicago, Meadville Theological School, Harvard University, and Andover Newton Theological School [is] a major American social ethicist of the two middle quarters of the twentieth century." With Professor Adams' rich background he has written with authority. In chapter two, titled, "The Purposes of 'Liberal' Education, he tells the story of a young man asked why he wanted a liberal education. Quoting from page twenty-two of the work, "The student promptly replied, 'The degree of Harvard College is worth money to me in Chicago.' The student possessed at least the virtue of candor, but his answer was the perfect answer of the 'interchangeable man,' what Emerson called 'the pea in the pod.' Education of this kind seeks improved means for unimproved ends." This work has good footnotes and is well indexed.
