Sendak writes a story that in the end has children thinking...Was the story real? Was he dreaming? Did Max visit the Wild Things? The use of words or lack there of on some pages attribute to the students engagement of the story. The pictures also enhance the story with their size and gradual appearance of what is happening. ( ![]() Read the 25th Anniversary edition. The book I borrowed from the library had a sticky note in the back pages with some questions, reproduced below: > "What kinds of mischief does Max get into?" > "Does the gender of Max's parent (and the fact that only one parent is mentioned) make a difference?" (Never noticed this before: there's only a mother figure) > "Why does Max's picture resemble Sendak's artwork?" (Not sure what this refers to.) We had this book in our third grade classroom and I used to gaze at it longingly and wish so much I could own my own copy. Loved the pictures. Don't remember the story. I had to re-read it as an adult. Still loved the pictures. Still don't own my own copy! This is a great book that is definitely geared toward a younger audience. This is probably a book that would be used for early elementary but could work very well in an early elementary english class. It shows the power of imagination and has a very good message. The main character max wears a wolf suit and sets sail to an island where he is named king and shares a wild rumpus, but then from across the world he smells good food to eat and wants to explore that because he realizes being king is not all that. Max eventually falls asleep it changes to a forest. This book is a good book to read in the classroom because it is very fun energetic read and good for all ages.
