This is the first in a long line of books by this author with essentially the same principle characters. Cletus Frade is a Marine fighter pilot who became an ace over Guadalcanal and is now working for William Donavan in the OSS. He makes amends with his father who he had never seen but had been led to believe was a bad person by his grandfather, and the uncle who raised him. There is wealth all over the place. As the major event of this first volume, Frade and his OSS team of Anthony Pelosi and David Ettinger lead the successful attack on a "neutral" ship acting as a supply vessel for German subs operating in the South Atlantic. Of course, Frade meets and marries the unlikely beauty daughter who doesn't think much of him. ( )

I've procrastinated in reading this book for several years...not wanting to begin a 21+ hour book leading to a 130 hour series. But, here goes... We get to know most of the characters pretty well. Three OSSers attempt to disable a German submarine tender in neutral Argentine waters. But, that's only abou 1/10 of the book. The rest is a soap opera. It's also notable that the technology is of the WWII period. Fun read. ( )

"An officer is honor bound to face whatever hazards his duty requires; not throw his life, or that of his men, away."

"Honor Bound" takes an interesting mix of colorful characters, wartime intrigue, blends them together in an uncommon World War II location, that results in a fairly deep and fun book. Based mostly in Buenos Aires, prolific military writer, W.E.B. Griffin does a good job of creating fairly fleshy characters, and creating a unique WWII thriller.

It's a little hard to even characterize this book. There's not a ton of military action, though it's clear that Griffin is passionate about the subject, as well as his adopted home of Argentina. The primary characters are just short of cliche's, but neither are they totally unique. ( )

This had some interesting direction. When thinking of WW2, how many people think of Argentina? Not I. So they're fascist, but is that so bad? So the OSS operating in a neutral country was different. 550 pages, 538 of them devoted to establishing the characters and their relationships, 12 pages left over for the operation. Like I said, Griffin writes WW2 soap operas, I just happen to like them.
I also learned the name of the head of German Intelligence. It made watching 'The Eagle has Landed' a little richer.
