I’d seen a review putting it in the same category as Maus, Persepolis, and The Arab of the Future. Those three really worked for me, I really liked them, but this one not nearly as much. I guess it’s pretty arty, but not in a way that appealed to me. ( ) This atmospheric, moody graphic memoir is full of beautiful and emotional illustrations that tells of a dysfunctional family. The illustrations feel very organic, in a way, the colors bleed into one another, the text is handwritten in different styles, the colors are muted and sepia-toned. For me, the storyline was a bit hard to follow in parts, a bit disjointed but still haunting. Goblet is a Belgian visual artist and I happened to come across this graphic memoir while browsing the ebook catalogue. I hadn’t heard of her before and after looking her up, learnt that she has quite a few graphic novels but it doesn’t look like any others have been translated into English. Pretending is Lying was published by @nyrcomics in 2016. Hopefully they will publish her other books? inga recensioner | lägg till en recension

"Pretending Is Lying is a memoir unlike any other. The first book to appear in English by the acclaimed Belgian artist Dominique Goblet, it is at once an intimate account of love and familial dysfunction and an audacious experiment in graphic storytelling. In a series of dazzling fragments--skipping through time, and from raw, slashing color to delicate black and white--Goblet examines the most important relationships in her life: with her partner, Guy-Marc; with her daughter, Nikita; with her alcoholic, well-meaning father; and with her abusive mother. More than a decade in the making, the result is an unnerving comedy of paternal dysfunction, an achingly ambivalent love story (with asides on the Beach Boys), and a searing account of childhood trauma--a dizzying, unforgettable view of a life in progress and a tour de force of the art of comics"-- Inga biblioteksbeskrivningar kunde hittas. |
