Perfect example of book blinded with science. I didn't expect any sensationalism but I was not prepared for this esoteric multitude of statistics, carbon dating methods, comparative study of Jewish and Protestant bibles. Pooh ( )

Just before reading this, I assumed I knew a fair amount about the Dead Sea Scrolls and was talking about them when I realised I was thinking of the Rosetta Stone.

Turns out I knew nothing about the Dead Sea Scrolls beyond "I think they revolutionised our understanding of early Christianity or something?" and even that was wrong! Lim does a good job here of explaining how their actual significance is much more subtle than that, though no less interesting.

The first few sections on their discovery and wider cultural impact were the most engaging; the scholarly debate over the Qumran-Essene hypothesis (arguing about who exactly lived on the site and wrote the scrolls) dragged on a bit. ( )

Not an ideal topic for a VSI, as the organization of this book makes clear: a bit on modern myths over the DSS; a bit on how they were discovered; a bit on the social context of the DSS; a tiny bit on the theology in them; a bit on the (minimal) amount they can tell us about early Christianity. Well and good, but really each of those topics, with the exception of the first, could have had a VSI all to itself. And the first explains, between the lines, why this book exists and none of the others do: semi-illiterate, ultra-pious, historical ignorance. ( )

Daags na het lezen van Michael Baigent & Richard Leigh – The Dead Sea Scrolls Deception heb ik gezocht naar zowel een complete uitgave van de Dode Zeerollen als een recenter overzichtswerk mbt de rollen en de interpretatie ervan, dus max. 10 jaar oud, ofzo. In 2011 is The Dead Sea Scrolls: a very short introduction (2005) van Timothy H. Lee vertaald in het Nederlands. In De Dode Zeerollen: een kort overzicht gaat de wetenschapper en schrijver achtereenvolgens in op de status van cultureel icoon, de archeologische vindplaats en de grotten. Van wie waren de rollen, welke literaire composities zijn er in de Qumranbibliotheek terug te vinden. De Qumran-essenen, want aan de werkhypothese van essenen als belangrijkste bewoners van de Qumran bewoning houdt ook Lim vast, wordt geplaatst in hun context, zowel geografisch als historisch. Welke geloofsovertuigingen werden eigenlijk aangehouden, hoewel dat net als in het jodendom minder strak vastligt als vele systematische theologieën op het christelijk erf. Wat voor beeld geven de rollen ons over het vroege christendom? Wel, vooral een historische duiding en een context dat er meer messias figuren rondliepen, dat de interpratatie van Mozes en de Profeten net als bij de apostelen (Paulus, Petrus, Johannes, Jacobus, etc.) eigenzinnig waren, net als bij de essenen. Lim waakt er wel voor complottheorieën aan te hangen, of veel waarde te hechten aan claims als het onderuit schoppen van de wortels van het christendom of wilde speculaties van het huwelijksleven van Jezus Christus. De grootste ontdekking van handschriften zit bijvoorbeeld in de beschikbaarheid van manuscripten van ver vóór de tot nu toe bekende manuscripen en de variabiliteit in de teksten dankzij het kopiëren, vertalen en interpreteren. Bewust, maar minder kwaadwillend, zoals bijvoorbeeld Erhman je wilt laten geloven. Ben je geprikkeld om verder te lezen, biedt Lim je een overzicht van aanvullende werken, zoals vertalingen, introducties, commentaren en handboeken. ( )
