A comprehensive clinical reference for certified oncology nurses and other nurses who care for cancer patients in a variety of settings. Part I, Principles of Oncology Nursing, includes 17 chapters which provide state-of-the-art understanding of cancer as a disease, its pathophysiology, the therapeutic modalities used to treat it, an overview of the principles of collaborative nursing management of cancer patients along the continuum of care, special considerations in providing physical and psychosocial care to terminally ill patients and their families, and cultural considerations. Part II, Practice of Cancer and Cancer Treatment, provides 59 chapters, each covering the clinical management of a specific type of cancer. Includes four innovative tables centering around the clinical care of the patient: The Standard of Care tables discuss the characteristics of treatment for a certain type of cancer by addressing problems, symptoms, interventions and rationales and patient education. The Assessment of the Patient tables provide guidelines for the practitioner to chronicle patient history, physical exams and typical diagnostic tests. The Patient Preparation tables help educate the patient about specific procedure they may endure. The Quality of Care tables read like a questionnaire to ensure patient satisfaction with pre- and post-operative treatment. Features many unique, separate chapters: four individual leukemia chapters (The Acute Leukemias, Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia, Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, and Hairy Cell Leukemia), three specific breast cancer chapters (Breast Cancer In-Situ Disease, Infiltrating Breast Cancer, and Metastatic Breast Cancer), a family issues chapter, and a large pediatrics chapter. Provides an Internet appendix - a quick, easy-to-read reference for Internet research with the name of each organization listed, followed by their Internet address.… (mer)
