John MacArthur and other distinguished teachers of preachers respond to the apostle's mandate in this comprehensive treatment of expository preaching. Dr. MacArthur's well-known passion for the Scriptures is combined with the vision and expertise of other faculty members at The Master's Seminary to produce a definitive statement on how to unfold the meaning of God's Word effectively to today's congregation. Other contributors include: James F. Stitzinger, James E. Rosscup, Robert L. Thomas, George J. Zemek, Donald G. McDougall, Richard L. Mayhue, Irvin A. Busenitz, and David C. Deuel. Given that the book has multiple authors there was some variation, expectedly so, in the manner they with which they approached the subject matter of their particular chapter. Additionally, the clarity with which they dealt with their assigned topic varied. As someone who has only been preaching weekly for two years and made the move to expositional preaching one year ago I found that some topics were covered in an uneven manner, so that I didn’t really learn well of the topic at hand.
A marked strength of this book were the chapters written by MacArthur. He wrote a number of chapters, one for nearly every main section of the book. While I rarely listen to MacArthur preach I found the chapters he wrote to consistently be the best of the book, both in practical terms of the material covered as well as in the ways he continually sought to nurture preachers in the expositional method of preparing and delivering sermons. Overall, I would rate this as a very good book and worth the time spent reading it and in incorporating it's teaching into my own growth as an expositional preacher. ( )
