No matter who or what the story is about it always grips me from the first page to the last. I especially love her books that take place in Tortall. I love both Daine and Numair and I'm a great lover of animals so the Immortals series is not only one of my favorite Tamora Pierce series of all times it is also one of my favorite series period. This was pretty bad.... I don't think the parts in the realm of the gods were very good. Her parents were unlikeable, forcibly trying to keep her with them and at the end suddenly being ok with never seeing her again?? It feels like some character development was missing. This book didn't have much of the charming human or animal side characters. The inklings were cute but there wasn't much to them. Them ecoming selfaware came out of nowhere. I feel like this book has a lot of development missing. The romance felt creepy to me (ca. 17/18 year old girl and her much older, much more experienced teacher?? Why??? The platonic student-teacher relationship was so good before!). Also RAPE TW "And why do you weep? You've killed before." "And I hate it" she cried. "Especially when this poor, idiot thing couldn't do no different!" She tried to gather her things, and dumped them into the mud. "Look at him—what else is he made for but to prey on females? Are there any lady tauroses?" "No. No, there aren't." "Wonderful! No one cared enough to give them mates of their own kind. All they know to do is grab two-legger females. They either kill them or get killed themselves. It's wrong!" The author most likely didn't mean to, and maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it sounds very incel-y and rape apologist to me. "Oh he has no ladies of his own kind so he HAS to rape! Poor thing!!" *puke* especially because immortals have been consistently shown to be smart and conscious. But apparently, not being able to get consensual sex turns them into a mindless rapist beast through no fault of their own?

I reached this book with bittersweet feelings because it is the last in the series, and while there are cameos of Daine and Numair in later books, they are only cameos.
As a mythology junkie, this book was pure awesome. Pierce provides tantalizing glimpses of some of the other, before unmentioned, gods in the pantheon, and how new gods are created. (
