This volume includes four unrelated issues of the comic book series, although they all have something to say about the power of stories and inspiration.
In "Calliope," the most powerful of the ancient Greek muses is captured, sexually abused, and held against her will by two male writers to receive the creative spark she provides. We learn Calliope was once a love of Morpheus and they had a son together.
In "A Dream of a Thousand Cats," Morpheus (as a magnificent panther) appears to a cat seeking independence from humans and explains how she can use the power of dreams to change reality.
In "A Midsummer's Night Dream," Shakespeare premieres his famous play (created with Morpheus's help) to an audience of fairy folk, the same ones depicted in the play.
"Facade" is the sad story of a person turned into a superhuman by a god who has lost her place in the world and with it her will to live. How do you kill yourself if you're indestructible? Morpheus doesn't appear at all in this story, but it does feature his adorable sister, Death.
I found this volume to be incredibly creative and insightful. It gets to the heart of what "The Sandman" is all about, despite the absence of longer story-cycle tying everything together. ( )

It's filler, four unrelated stories between the arc-style stories in Vol 2 and Vol 4. But it's excellent filler, wouldn't expect any less from Gaiman after all. ( )
