What a delightful trip back to the world of Tortall. I had been hesitant to start this one as it felt strange to not have the story centered on our favorite Lionesses. I was elated to run into many familiar faces throughout this book.
Daine starts out just slightly older than Alanna was when we met her, although that is about the end of the similarities in backstory. The way the magic in this story was explained made it feel exciting and fresh while still acknowledging the magic we already knew of in the world. It did take a few chapters for me to feel connected to Daine, which was well worth the wait.
Excited to jump into the next book soon to see where Daine’s journey takes her. ( )
I loved this novel so much! I really liked listening to his one as well. I loved the main character so much and all the cameos from he other tamora pierce characters! Ending was so cute! CAN'T WAIT TO Start the next one! ( )

I was afraid to read this again as an adult - the last time I read this I was a teen reading this book over and over, absolutely enthralled. I was worried that re-reading it again now I'd see flaws and the magic would be ruined.
But instead reading this book was like coming home. I was reluctant to finish, wanting to linger in the world for as long as possible.
I love all the settings - on the road with Onua, the Palace, Pirates Swoop, and the cast of characters who all seem so welcoming.
Maybe I'll make re-reading this a regular thing again! ( )
