Reviewed on HereBeFiction: http://shar.es/kqe2L ( ) Powell’s Little Red Riding Hood, Ruby, has the trademark red cloak – knit by her grandmother and surrounded with magic. Ruby heads off with a basket of goodies to see her ill grandmother, and meets the wolf along the way. He convinces Ruby to find a four-leaf clover for the old woman then sneaks off ahead to grandma’s house. When Ruby arrives, something seems off about grandma: her voice, her eyes, and her teeth. Will Ruby figure out the wolf’s plan before it’s too late? The classic tale is reimagined, complete with a twist ending and impressive graphics. Rivas’ illustrations are beautifully detailed and brightly coloured. The twist of the story is interesting, but strays a little too far from the original storyline for me. There is a brief history of the tale, glossary of terms, and discussion questions at the end of the graphic novel, which I found interesting. This title was the first graphic novel I have read, and I found it a nice introduction to the format. Red Riding Hood is the graphic version of Little Red Riding Hood. This is the first Graphic Novel I have ever read. I enjoyed it because the story was changed a bit so that made it fresh. The illustrations were very detailed especially the wolf! I was a bit confused if Grandmother actually died. Other than that the story was cohesive and enjoyable. I think this Graphic Novel would be enjoyed by young readers ages 9 and up. Another nice edition to this book was the quick list of characters on the front pages. There was also a little bit about the author, illustrator, a glossary, a history of the story, discussion questions, writing prompts and some kid-safe internet sites they can go on for further research on the back pages. An excellent series with absolutely gorgeous, usually stylized artwork. Each title includes a glossary, history of the tale in question, and discussion questions, making them as valuable educationally as they are recreationally. I highly recommend them for anyone with children interested in fairy tales. The tale of Little Red Riding Hood in graphic novel format with a few changes. Like Rumpelstiltskin, which Martin Powell also wrote, Little Red Riding Hood is much more empowered. First off she has her own name, which is Ruby and Ruby kills the wolf. Ruby is not a victim here and when the wolf is about to eat her, she fights him. The plot is slightly changed. Powell chose to set the story in Transylvania, have the grandmother talk to a fortune teller at the beginning, and Ruby's red riding hood has protective powers during the day time. Personally, I found these changes to be a little strange and I did not really see how they added much to the story. The setting is vague and is mostly in the woods. If the graphic novel had not begun with a page on Transylvania, the reader would have no idea that it was set there. In my opinion, adding the setting of Transylvania adds more confusion than value to the story. There are themes of good vs evil and the ability to fight back against those who try to harm you. There is very little narration, which helps the tale translate to graphic novel format. I think that it also increases the action a little bit. However, since there is more dialogue it also makes the graphic novel harder to read aloud and these group of graphic novels will probably be best suited for individual reading. The illustrations do an amazing job of making the wolf seem sinister and scary. The scene where the wolf is impersonating grandma is particularly well illustrated. Since, this tale is a scarier and darker it may be more suitable for middle schoolers or for children who really like to be scared . Recommended. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
