Almost great and refreshing, If it wasn't for the use of some really tiresome tropes that mangles the story by crashing you out of your suspension of disbelief. As it stands, it's an intriguing idea and promising attempt, that leaves you hoping for bettering things to come. ( )

I liked the first book in the Demon Cycle, especially Leesha's strong character and how she became apprentice to the town healer, when she seemed destined to become a dull housewife, like her mother. The other main character, Arlen, was also stuck in a small town situation, with bigger aspirations, especially when his mother is killed by demons, partially due to his father's cowardice. A little slow at times, and I think the demonology could have as well developed as defensive wards were; but, overall a strong effort, where things were not always as expected. Looking forward to the next book. ( )

I got this through a Goodreads giveaway and was so excited, since it had been on my To Read shelf for ages. I have finally gotten a chance to read it. I have to say, I was hoping for more than I got.

It started out very satisfyingly. The plot is great. Something unique, and told well. I could connect to each of the main characters and understand their motivations. But as it went on, it felt more and more inconsistent. Reading from one section to the next felt choppy, even when it was the same character. Some of the characters' actions didn't seem consistent with what we had learned of their personalities.

Obviously when reading a book, especially a fantasy/adventure book, we're not usually going to be reading about the every day person that nothing ever happens to and that lives their life normally. But suspension of disbelief becomes a little harder to manage when your main character essentially goes from being a little bookwork to an untouchable superhero in half a book, two thirds of which is taken up by other characters, where most of where it IS described is glossed over. By the end of the book I lost my connection to that one almost completely.

I'll read on for now, because I'd like to see what happens next. The world itself is fascinating, though I'm not liking the painfully misogynistic feel of it. That sort of thing was rampant in the old (and modern) real world, so it does come up in the fantasy world a fair bit. ( )

This was another one of my series-sampling audio listens, to see if I might want to pursue it in print someday. I’ve had a good run on audiobooks lately – this is my third definite “yes” in a row.

Audio Narration
The narrator is Pete Bradbury. He isn’t too dramatic and his character voices are distinct but not over-done. Female characters are often a problem for male narrators, but Pete Bradbury simply voiced them with a slightly softer voice that I easily interpreted as belonging to a female character without thinking about it or being irritated by it. He’s one of the few narrators who have let me nearly forget I was listening to him while I just focused on the words of the story. This is exactly what I want out of an audiobook narrator.

Story
The story is set on a fantasy world where its people are plagued by demons when the sun goes down. Weapons aren’t very effective against them, and the only real defense people have is to draw wards on their buildings and other man-made structures. If drawn properly, this creates an invisible magical barrier that the demons can't get through. If they’re drawn incorrectly, or if they get marred in some manner, the magic doesn’t work and the demons can get through. Nearly everybody is terrified of the demons and hides from them at night.

The story has three main POVs, two boys and a girl, who we meet at fairly young ages and follow into early adulthood. Although the characters are young, I didn’t get a YA vibe from the book. It just felt like a typical epic fantasy beginning where characters are often introduced as children and the reader follows them into and through adulthood. There’s minimal romance, which I appreciated. There is some, but it didn’t dominate the story. The instalove with Arlen and Leesha toward the end was a little annoying, though. I liked all of the characters quite a bit. Arlen was my favorite, but some of his decisions bugged me, especially in the second half of the story. Leesha was a bit wimpy in the beginning, but she grew on me more and more.

If you get tired of the epic fantasy coming-of-age tales, you might get very bored with this story because there are three of them and they take up a large chunk of the book. I, however, seem to have infinite capacity for new coming-of-age tales, so I enjoyed all three of them. The plot is straight-forward, but it didn’t feel derivative and I enjoyed the world-building. I did think the title made everything that happens in the second half a bit too obvious. I predicted the general thing it represents from the beginning of the book, but maybe it was supposed to be obvious. I was a little bothered that we bypassed much of Arlen’s transformation. It made his shift in personality and motivations more jarring. I thought it needed at least one more short chapter with him that takes place between the point where we left him as Arlen and the point where we met him again as the Warded Man. I’m guessing the author did that intentionally to let the reader also experience him as a mysterious entity along with the other characters, but it made me lose some of my emotional investment in him.

There were some moments that stretched my belief, particularly toward the second half, and I drifted off a bit during some of the more drawn-out action sequences. Mostly, though, I was fully interested in the story and I looked forward to listening to more of it each day. The ending wraps up nicely, while leaving some interesting dangling threads to indicate the path the next book is likely to take. I look forward to following up on this series in print someday and finding out what happens next. ( )

I'm at best ambivalent about this book. It reminds me of Brandon Sanderson's Rithmatist, Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time, Joe Abercrombie's First Law, and George R. R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire. Sadly it heavily features things I most disliked from each of those stories. Apparently the series gets better over time, but I don't think I have the patience to check.

The bar for suspension of disbelief is high: People in this Fantasy world don't exhibit enough ingenuity or pragmatism for it to feel real to me. The story's world has lots of details I had to overlook for it to make sense.

But the violence was especially hard to stomach. Not just detailed gore and a casual attitude towards interpersonal violence in a world where monsters appear daily, a-la typical Post-Apocalypia, but also really excessive sexual violence. In a Fantasy world where everyone is already extremely vulnerable all that did to my reading experience was add grimdark gritty "realism", which I hated in a setting where so many other things are so intensely unrealistic. The great horn sounded.

Arlen paused in his work, looking up at the lavender wash of the dawn sky. Morning mist still clung to the air, bringing with its damp an acrid taste that was all too familiar. A quiet dread built in his gut as he waited in the morning stillness, hoping that it had been his imagination. He was eleven years old.
