When Prudence Malone attends her college reunion, she expects to catch up with her girlfriends and visit the campus she left in the eighties. But when she runs into her old college flame--the one who got away--they both realize that their post-graduation break-up was a mistake. On Sunday afternoon, Matt impulsively proposes and the two plan to wed that summer. But before marrying Matt, Prudence has a problem to deal with--her husband, Reilly. Prudence could divorce Reilly like a normal person, but she's far too wacky for that. Her solution is to secretly find a replacement wife for Reilly for after she and Matt marry. This shouldn't be too difficult, she decides. After all, she lives in Manhattan where there are plenty of single women. And she can enlist the help of her three best friends: a costume-wearing advertising executive, a saucy single mother, and a level-headed gay artist. Through singles ads and a "Wife of Reilly" gallery exhibit, the gang of four meets New York's nuttiest single women looking for love. And through her eight-month search, Prudence ultimately helps find the next wife of Reilly, though not at all in the way she had originally planned. Somewhere along the journey, she discovers something far more important to her, though--herself!… (mer)

I rarely give up on books, but this one had me beat after only 7% in. It wasn't only that I didn't like the main character. In fact, I kind of liked that I hated the woman because I wanted to see what the author would do to redeem such a horrible person. No, what turned me off were the flashbacks embedded in flashbacks and the complete improbability of the story (the woman returns to U of M football game twelve years after she graduated and, out of a crowd of tens of thousands of people, just happens to be sitting two rows over from the man she once dated in college?) The anti-parenting diatribe at the beginning pushed me over the edge.

I wanted to like this book because I thought the premise and cover was cute. Also, I love reading books about my home state. Unfortunately, I just couldn't do it. ( )

Free on kindle. Spoilers. I have GOT to read better books. This is supposed to be funny but it was mostly just stupid. Our heroine meets her old boyfriend at a college reunion and she is somewhat unhappy & bored in her marriage so she tells the old flame that her husband is dead so he will have sex with her. The old flame is a real jerk, ultimately, and there isn't much reason to believe otherwise. But he asks her to marry him and she says yes. So now she has to figure out what to do & her idiotic solution is to find a new wife for her old husband. She has friends who seem to be good friends & sensible ones but they go along with this silliness. Meanwhile, the old flame is clearly a jerk. Meanwhile the husband is a nice guy. Meanwhile our heroine has never forgiven her father for leaving her mother and her when she was 12 and now her father is working to earn her forgiveness. So it plods along. The husband finds out what is going on, and leaves her, and he does find a new & better wife; and the old flame dumps her; and she takes herself to Italy.

The main character is pretty stupid & dull so that's a problem. Another problem is that these are rich people and don't seem to have sense or understanding.

The cover of the book was what immediately caught my attention. As I read the back cover, I thought this was a clever way to end your current relationship and to be guilt-free when you start your new one. But the question is, are you truly guilt-free? All in all this was a good fun read. Prudence and her friends make this a drama-filled search to finding a new wife for Reilly. But we really can't judge Prudence.... we all have once or twice thought "what if" about the one who got away. ( )
