storyjunkie: Both are tales of how to survive a world gone mad, though there are no zombies in Butler's. Both works' treatment of the human questions are equally nuanced, variable, and detailed.
ijustgetbored: A completely different take on zombies: here, they're not "out to get you," just beings who may or may not have souls, and Lindqvist treats all those related questions.
timspalding: Some may take offense at the suggestion, but I think don't think World War Z could have been written without And the Band Played On, an oral history of the all-too-real AIDS epidemic. Shilts' is by far the better book, even if it weren't true and important.… (mer)
I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up WORLD WAR Z. I had watched the movie and had enjoyed it. A few years ago, my husband had attempted to read the book and set it down after a couple of chapters. He couldn't get into it because it read like nonfiction rather than a linear narrative with a central character.
I read a lot of nonfiction and generally enjoy it, so I could sink into this intensely believable account of what it would be like to live through the zombie apocalypse. I was particularly enthralled by the in-depth look at various cultures' reactions and attitudes toward the zombie outbreak. And then there were the chapters that so closely paralleled aspects of the response to our own recent pandemic experience. I found those chapters the most unsettling of all.
The book is exceptionally well researched, well thought out, and well developed. Brooks dives deep into various individual narratives. Each segment reads like a stand-alone short story linked by a potential world-ending event. I zoomed through this book quickly - and I've been sleeping with a night light on ever since. ( )
Meh. It was okay. I don’t really like the form the author chose for the story. Frankly, I would’ve preferred a traditional narrative granted, he would have had more trouble fitting in a world-spanning overview of the titular zombie war. I didn’t mind it as much with the Zombie Survival Guide because the title tells you what you’re getting into, but I wanted more of a novel on this one. I did appreciate the commentary on Gulf War-era politics, the fact that things on that front have only gotten worse is just pathetic. I did like how it linked the series of smaller prewar outbreak events with each other in a cascade of events, that was very interesting. However, overall, it was just okay. I get the feeling it was a work of its time, and it feels dated to me, a product of the 2000s zombie craze. I’m not sure I’d recommend this one though a few stories seem to have spilled into a few current (particularly Japanese and Korean) zombie movies I have seen lately. ( )
Way better than I thought it was going to be and nothing like the movie. I'm amazed at how Max Brooks thought of all these different nuances about what a world would look like in a Zombie apocalypse. The political challenges, how the military had to drastically change their tactics to how each culture dealt with the challenge of fighting the zombies. ( )
I liked the way the story was told. There were a lot of insights into human nature and comments on society. A more intelligent book than I anticipated. ( )
This was a fantastic audiobook. It kept me hooked and I loved the full cast of voice actors. I had never seen the movie before so I went into this blind and I loved it. I loved how Max Brooks thought through so many different scenarios and outcomes and I loved that he "interviewed" people all over the world to really get the scope of the zombie apocalypse. If you love zombie books and movies then this will not disappoint - I wish the book were longer - I feel like there were so many different perspectives he could have included! I would definitely recommend the audiobook version - I feel that since this was an oral history - that it was the best way to read it - the voice actors really were superb too! ( )

And then there were the chapters that so closely paralleled aspects of the response to our own recent pandemic experience. I found those chapters the most unsettling of all.
