Another one I read with Milly for her bedtime story. Quite enjoyed it, Artemis Fowl is a thoroughly precocious and annoying child and the fairies are quite funny. ( ![]() I found it pretty unstriking I've also listened to and enjoyed 3* - The Arctic Incident #2, The Eternity Code #3, The Opal Deception #4 The fact a book was written with children in mind does not excuse writing so poorly composed that it would have embarrassed me to write it when I was a child. The story may or may not have been any good; I do not know, because I did not finish it. What I do know is that the writing was quite simply so bad that I did not waste my time reading most of the book. I suppose an elementary school teacher would have praised the author for the dedication it took to write something that long, if the author was one of that teacher's students. Most children do not have the patience for such an undertaking, after all. As I understand it, though, this author is an adult, so I have no praise to offer. My daughter read and loved these books some years ago, and I have finally had a chance to dive into them. Now I see what she was raving about! Fun, fast-paced, and highly literate, I'd recommend this book to any reader, young or old, who loves urban or contemporary fantasy.
The truth is, fairies in their essence are said to possess glamour, a word that originally meant something like charm -- the ability to bewitch. Hardware may intrigue, caustic belligerence may be sexy to a contemporary 12-year-old, but neither ingredient bewitches. Despite a brave and promising premise, ''Artemis Fowl'' is charmless. Characterizations and dialogue enhance a rollicking tale that will have readers rolling on the floor and eagerly anticipating the planned sequel Fun to read, full of action and humor, this is recommended for all public libraries and to readers of all ages The combination of choppy sentences and ornate language will appeal to some readers, although not necessarily to Harry Potter fans; the emphasis here is more on action (some of it gory), technology, and deadpan humor than on magic, and only one character (Artemis) is a child. Despite numerous clever gadgets and an innovative take on traditional fairy lore, the author falls short of the bar. Ingår iÅterberättas i
When a twelve-year-old evil genius tries to restore his family fortune by capturing a fairy and demanding a ransom in gold, the fairies fight back with magic, technology, and a particularly nasty troll. Inga biblioteksbeskrivningar kunde hittas. |
