Names all the major sights of California. The use of Comic Sans and lack of story detract, but the California-ness is quite palpable. No rhymes, a bit of a hodge podge (and ever since someone pointed out the sun doesn't ever rise over the Pacific and a picture of a sequoia shouldn't be labeled as a redwood, this series has seemed even more like a Wikipedia-grubbing quick-and-dirty money maker for someone).

There's definitely an opportunity here for someone to take the same idea and do it better. Even so, this book isn't terrible. (

I remember books and places together. I remember the place I was when I read a book. Sometimes it's the place I remember first. Good Night California by Adam Gamble will forever be linked to Christmas morning, 2013.

The book belongs to my nephew. We were at his house to open presents and while we were waiting for things to start, I borrowed his board book and read it.

Good Night California, as the title implies, is an homage to Goodnight Moon. It's part of a series of state themed books, giving children a chance to say goodnight to their home state.

The book covers a bunch of landmarks and different times of day. As we live about 500 miles away (but in the same state) as our nephew, a book like this is a nice way for us to connect. (

"Good Night California" is a board book most likely designed to be used as a bedtime story for little ones. However, perhaps because the book depicts familiar California landmarks, or maybe because the text is so fun and simple to read, I have noticed many nine and ten year-olds selecting it from a crowded bookshelf. Author Adam Gamble starts the book off with the greeting "Good morning, Pacific Ocean. Good morning, surfers and pier" and then takes the reader on a tour of California that magically lasts one day.Some of the highlights are the California redwoods, Hollywood, the Golden Gate Bridge, Death Valley, Yosemite, and the capitol building in Sacramento. Cooper Kelly's illustrations are friendly and semi-cartoonish. The drawings feature families of many ethnicities. (
