This was a different book and occasionally I was confused if Jason the speaker was talking in the present or in the past. The book was very interesting and make me wonder if it was based on a true story and if that was really the way this particular boy with Autism thought. The author did a really great job of catching the human stream of consciousness and I was really able to catch the speaker's angst. Thankfully, there wasn't a fix all ending (which would have irritated the hell out of me), but instead the ending left you feeling hopeful for the speaker and maybe even for the other people out there who might be a little different. Jason Blake is 12-year-old boy that has autism. Jason enjoys writing and posts short stories on a website for aspiring authors and is finding it hard to fit in to a world due to his condition. Of the few that reads his stories is PhoenixBird. He use to find friendship hard until his friendship with PhoenixBird began. Jason writes on the website about his family, school, that writing leads Jason to go to the national story-writing. This is a great story for teenager to read that will help them further understand autism and its also great for autistic teenagers to show that just because they have autism doesn’t mean they can achieve their dream. Anything But Typical is about a twelve-year-old boy who has autism. He is a writer on this online site for adolescents called Storyboard. There, he "meets" a girl he is afraid to meet in person because she may only see his autism. At school, the book describes difficulties he encounters and how everything has a label. Throughout the book, he also has flashbacks that give a deeper background of his story to the reader. I would recommend this book in English to foster acceptance for diversity as well as enlighten some understanding as to how things can be processed differently by different people. I enjoyed reading this book and encourage others to read as well. ( )

I picked up Anything But Typical by Nora Raleigh Baskin because I enjoy reading books that help me get into the mind of someone else. I was pulled into Jason’s story and could easily relate to him. I think many of us are insecure about ourselves and afraid to reveal who we really are to others. Jason loves to write and can be himself when he's putting his writing out there on the internet. I also find writing to be very freeing, so right away I connected to him. I was happy that Jason made a friend online, but I worried about what she would think of him in person. Seeing the world from a different perspective helps us to be more compassionate. I would recommend this book to readers in grades four and up who want to learn to understand others and see what it's like to walk in their shoes. I think we all feel misunderstood sometimes, and because of that you will relate to Jason and the struggles he's going through. I look forward to reading more books by this author! ( )
