Fantasy fans, rejoice! Seven years after writer and editor Robert Silverberg made publishing history with Legends, his acclaimed anthology of original short novels by some of the greatest writers in fantasy fiction, the long-awaited second volume is here. Legends II picks up where its illustrious predecessor left off. All of the bestselling writers represented in Legends II return to the special universe of the imagination that its author has made famous throughout the world. Whether set before or after events already recounted elsewhere, whether featuring beloved characters or compelling new creations, these masterful short novels are both mesmerizing stand-alones-perfect introductions to the work of their authors-and indispensable additions to the epics on which they are based. Beyond any doubt, Legends II is the fantasy event of the season. ROBIN HOBB returns to the Realm of the Elderlings with "Homecoming," a powerful tale in which exiles sent to colonize the Cursed Shores find themselves sinking into an intoxicating but deadly dream . . . or is it a memory? GEORGE R. R. MARTIN continues the adventures of Dunk, a young hedge knight, and his unusual squire, Egg, in "The Sworn Sword," set a generation before the events in A Song of Ice and Fire.ORSON SCOTT CARD tells a tale of Alvin Maker and the mighty Mississippi, featuring a couple of ne'er-do-wells named Jim Bowie and Abe Lincoln, in "The Yazoo Queen." DIANE GABALDON turns to an important character from her Outlander saga-Lord John Grey-in "Lord John and the Succubus," a supernatural thriller set in the early days of the Seven Years War. ROBERT SILVERBERG spins an enthralling tale of Majipoor's early history-and remote future-as seen through the eyes of a dilettantish poet who discovers an unexpected destiny in "The Book of Changes." TAD WILLIAMS explores the strange afterlife of Orlando Gardiner, from his Otherland saga, in "The Happiest Dead Boy in the World." ANNE McCAFFREY shines a light into the most mysterious and wondrous of all places on Pern in the heartwarming "Beyond Between." RAYMOND E. FEIST turns from the great battles of the Riftwar to the story of one soldier, a young man about to embark on the ride of his life, in "The Messenger." ELIZABETH HAYDON tells of the destruction of Serendair and the fate of its last defenders in "Threshold," set at the end of the Third Age of her Symphony of Ages series. NEIL GAIMAN gives us a glimpse into what befalls the man called Shadow after the events of his Hugo Award-winning novel American Gods in "The Monarch of the Glen." TERRY BROOKS adds an exciting epilogue to The Wishsong of Shannara in "Indomitable," the tale of Jair Ohmsford's desperate quest to complete the destruction of the evil Ildatch . . . armed only with the magic of illusion. My favourite story in this collection is Diana Gabaldon's and that is probably because it is not fantasy at all. Like her other writing it is really historical romance. I guess what qualifies it for this collection is the use of succubi as a plot device but since, in the end, the succubi turn out to be real women I don't consider it fantasy.

All of the others were well written and enjoyable enough if you like the hero or heroic group on a quest to save the world. Orson Scott Card's story was slightly different in that it is set in a recognizable United States although one that had never gone through the Revolutionary War.

I still don't think I'll ever develop a taste for fantasy but for those who like it, this is a good collection. ( )

Legends II: Dragon, Sword, and King bounds together short stories from five bestselling authors in fantasy in one-half of a follow up volume to the first Legends anthology. Edited by Robert Silverberg, this collection sees returning authors such as George R.R. Martin and Orson Scott Card with newcomers Terry Brooks, Diana Gabaldon, and Elizabeth Haydon. All are connected to the author’s best known established universe; however the success of each story is how the reader quickly understands the universe connected to it.

The first three stories in this volume are the best of the five, whether stand alone or part of a prequel sequence, they’re success was on how minimal the reader needed to be knowledge about the author’s established universe regardless of how long their story was. The last two stories while okay-to-good suffered from the reader trying to comprehend some aspect of the established world or in the case of one story having no clue about the importance of anything given that the story was an epilogue of an entire series.

The fact that the two weakest stories of the collection finish off the book gives the overall volume a bad rap when finishing it, however the first three stories make this collection for any first-time readers of their authors. For long-time or experiences readers of any or all of these authors, these stories will be well worth the read.

Worth it for the MArtin story alone. ( )

Un recull d'històries centrades en els universos (i a vegades també en els protagonistes) d'altres obres més conegudes dels autors. La veritat és que són totes obres menors i força prescindibles que mantenen l'encant de les atmosferes de les obres originals i poc més. ( )

More excellent fantasy. This is really a single book, Legends II, split into two books for the paperback version. Orson Scott Card, Terry Brooks, George R. R. Martin and others. A really excellent collection. Despite the title, there's no theme to the Legends collection, just the authors writing about their existing worlds or characters. ( )

Legends II Part 1, containing five short stories, is the second book in the Legends series. It is not the same book as Legends Vol 2, which is part of the original Legends anthology. The original Legends anthology was split into 3 volumes when it was first published in paperback in the US. And it was also split into 2 volumes in the UK, neither of those legends 2 is this Legends II Part 1 be very careful when combining.
