The adventures of David as he begins his adventure of learning his first words. It chronicles in easy to understand phrasing and words how David learns his first words. The fun that David has allows him to learn words like pelota (ball), perro (dog), mas (more) and most importantly, mama. The drawings and the words combine in a heartwarming way to end well.

I like the construction of this book, it has withstood my sons use and has been read to him often. The words are useful to my son because the adventures are the same as David, so the words he hears are the same (uh oh!). This book has an appeal because of the happy ending and the fact that David has a happy life. The illustrations are simple and clear.

This book is published in more than one language, that could be useful in a classroom as well as at home for early exposure to language. The story of David would allow a child to know that they are loved even when they make messes. The illustrations can be used to help young people begin to identify the various aspects of their day, what comes first, second and last in the day. ( )

I love David Shannon's scribbly illustrations as if a young kid helped him illustrate. I love this book and others by David Shannon as they celebrate being a kid--making mistakes, messes, having fun--with the affirmation that you are still loved!

This is a very fun reader for a child who is just beginning to read. ( )
